ALBANY, NY » For Shen’s Stevo Poulin, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany is just another day at the office.

“He has proven himself here in the past,” said Shen Wrestling Head Coach Rob Weeks. “He does not get rattled in this environment, he has wrestled on bigger stages, so he has that advantage, which gives us the advantage to go out there to really feel comfortable and go out there and pin his opponent. That helps the team race.”

Poulin did Poulin things Saturday at the Times Union Center, claiming his third New York State title at 113 pounds. Along with Poulin, Shen teammate Brock DelSignore and Tamarac wrestler Bobby Treshock each competed for a state title.

Poulin, who has one loss as part of the Shen Wrestling team over the last three seasons, earned back to back pins in quarterfinal and final after earning a major decision, 19-5, in the first round of the tournament. Poulin then beat Section VIII wrestler Jeremiah Echeverria in the champion

ship round with a 24-5 technical fall.

Treshock was confident coming into the tournament earlier in the week and backed it up with his performance on the mat on Friday and Saturday.

“The goal is to win,” said Treshock Wednesday at the Curby Training Facility in Troy. “I’m going for the top. I’ve wrestled some of the guys there and they don’t know me and they won’t be defending the stuff that is usually being defended. I’m looking to win this thing.”

This season was Treshock’s first trip to the Times Union Center for the state tournament. Treschock was the fourth Tamarac wrestler to claim a sectional title and claimed the career wins record for Tamarac. Despite his succesful career, Treshock was never able to make it past the Section II Tournament.

“This has been a long time coming for him,” said Head Tamarac Wrestling Coach Eric Roadcap after Treshock won his semifinal match Saturday. “He’s a five time sectional place finisher. He always had a jinx in the semis where he was winning the match but then came up short. To show the perseverance and keep wrestling, I mean he wrestles around 200 matches all over the country in the off season, it’s really refreshing to know the kid finally got his reward.”

Treshock opened the tournament Friday with a technical fail win at 4:38 over Section IX’s Sean Tansey. He went on to get a 5-4 decision that night over Ian Schwam from Section I. Saturday, Treshock beat Section V’s Seamus Costello in a 7-0 decision before winning the Division II 145 title over Section V’s Ethan Ferro in overtime, 11-8.

Shen wrestler Brock DelSignore made it the furthest he ever has Saturday thanks to wins over Section IX’s Ethan Gallo in the semifinal, Brooklyn Technical’s Andrew Grechko quarterfinal, and Section VIII’s Frank Kempton in the opening round. In the final, DelSignore faced Section VIII’s Matthew Rogers.

The results for DelSignore’s final round did not make press time, but will be available at sports@troyrecord.com and sports@saratogian.com.

“I’ve had stuff haunting me after the last couple of years of not making the podium,” said Delsignore after the semifinal. “Yesterday was a turning stone and today I am making a statement that I am a state champ.”

Shen’s Colden Dorfman also trudged on through the tournament at the 160 weight class before falling in the semifinal to Section V’s Cooper Kropman. Dorfman would end up finishing fourth in the tournament.

Section II had quite the representation at the tournament and several wrestlers were able to continue on into Saturday for a stretch. Averill Park’s Sean Malenfant fell in the 152 semifinal and claimed fifth in the tournament. Mohonasen’s Jake Deguire, followed the same path of falling in the semi and claiming fifth in the consolation bought.

Hudson Falls’ Chris Petteys and Maple Hill’s Caleb Svingala were able to claim third place after falling in the semifinal in Saturday’s action.

“I just tried my best. That last guy was slicker than me and he found ways to beat me,” said Malenfant. “I have got to improve. I have to wrestle better. I have to move forward for the rest of the tournament.”
