Section 2 Athletics extends suspension of all competition until April 30
TROY, NY » Spring high school sports in the Capital Region will officially not be happening in the month of April this year.
On Monday, April 6, Section 2 announced that they would be extending their initial suspension of April 19 to April 30 for all scrimmages and competition, both league and non-league. The suspension is an effort to limit contact and control social distancing in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“As the entire state and nation have been dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic for the past several weeks, Section 2 continues to be in touch with the many local health departments, the state health department, as well as the continued monitoring of the NYSED and Federal & State Government information that is coming out,” said Section 2 in their press release. “We are in unprecedented times and the Section is taking action to do our part in protecting our student-athletes and our
school communities.”
“Effective Immediately: We are extending our Section-wide decision to suspend any and all member schools from hosting scrimmages, league or non-league contests thru April 30th.”
Schools are currently shut down until April 15 in New York, per Governor Andrew Cuomo. That date may be extended.
“That date may or may not be extended. However, if that date is not extended, our member schools will follow the CDC Guidelines, as recommended by The President of the United States. If that date is extended by the Governor, that action will shut down all school interscholastic activities through the new deadline date, at which point we will review and advise.”
Teams across the section continue to practice social distancing while still trying to prepare for a spring season. Almost every team is utilizing google classroom for meetings and are doing individual work outs to stay fit and conditioned for when, or even if, Section 2 re-opens competition this spring.
“We continue to hold out hope that we may be able to have a return to Interscholastic Athletics and for whatever duration we are able to,” said Section 2 in their press release. “This pandemic and the immediate public health concern are the highest priority at this time, and we will continue to do all that we can to play a role in the stopping of the spread of this virus.”
