Riding the ‘waves’ with Jeep Wrangler Sahara EcoDiesel

- By Marc Grasso Boston Herald

Well the count is up to 163 waves so far …

No, that is not the amount of options available on the Jeep Wrangler Sahara, although close, but in fact the amount of hand waves from oncoming owners I received while reviewing the latest Wrangler Sahara from FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles).

As you know, the cult … it exists. That’s the Jeep cult — Wrangler owners for years have embraced a “wave,” saying hi to oncoming Jeepers.

Jeep is known for a seemingly endless array of options. Every “wavee” has the ability to go as crazy as they want in making their Wrangler as rad or stock as they prefer in creating their uniqueness.

“The Jeep Wrangler continues to lead the way with more fuel-efficient powertrains, dramatically improved on-road driving dynamics, and an array of advanced technology, connectivity and safety features that make it a pleasure to drive every day — on the road or trail,” said Scott Tallon, director of Jeep brand product marketing. “We are proud of our commitment to meet consumers’ increasing desire for a one-of-akind SUV that demonstrates a broad appeal.”

Our Firecracker Red Sahara EcoDiesel tester was a little change for us over the past Rubicon gas version we tested. The Italian-built 3.0-liter DOHC V6 diesel engine provides a stout 260 hp but an astounding 442 ft.-lb. of torque — 147 more than its gas 2.0L predecessor. It was torquey to say the least and got significantly better fuel mileage than the gas version, all for only $4,000 more.

Handling all of the torque brunt of the EcoDiesel, FCA paired it with its successful TorqueFlight 8-speed automatic transmission, a winning and quieter alternative.

Leather seats, a three-piece body color hardtop and upgraded Uconnect services, 18inch tires and LED lighting were just a few of the options on our tester, all of which we couldn’t live without on a future build.

The Uconnect infotainment system is still present and boy do we love it. Every single time we drive an FCA vehicle, we recognize more and more that they’ve nailed the infotainment world. The Uconnect system is by far the easiest to use, manage and navigate as well as utilizing Jeep’s large knobs and center control-heavy dash.

Almost 400 pounds heavier than the gas alternative, the Wrangler Sahara EcoDiesel really grips the road while still towing its normal 3,500 pounds.

From going to the beach, the honey-do list, moving, family grocery-getting, kid hauling or the everyday commute, the Wrangler serves as the ultimate all-purpose Ute. Its boxy shape is perfect for hauling, moving or just driving. On our test, we took it to Connecticut to assist with a friend’s garden. We took the doors and top off the Wrangler, of course, which took me under 15 minutes from start to finish. Easily carrying 20 bags of mulch, plants, wood and other items, the Wrangler was once again on its game and was appealing to the eye in doing so.

Yeah, you might think of the CJ-style army predecessor when referencing the Wrangler, but it is way more than that. It is a one-stop shop, do-it-all Ute, with a historic style and tons of class. I look forward to waving at you in your next Wrangler soon.
