Saratoga County Fair Queen and title holders named
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. » In a short ceremony that took place soon after the Saratoga County Fair’s ribbon cutting, the eight title holders for the 2020 Saratoga County Fair pageant were announced, including this year’s Fair Queen.
The event was live-streamed on FaceBook. 2019 Fair Queen Madison Wolfe read a short speech thanking all of the girls and young women who had participated in the pageant for this year’s titles, praising their efforts. This year’s pageant had 42 contestants across the eight agebased divisions.
Wolfe also thanked the judges and sponsors of this year’s pageant, which was done mostly online to accommodate the health and safety restrictions in place as a result of the pandemic.
The winners’ names were then revealed live, as Wolfe opened eight envelopes one by one, pulling out the cards sealed inside and reading them for the camera.
“This is the 58th pageant for the Saratoga County Fair Queen,” explained pageant director Madison Manuel before the ceremony began. “And it’s not just a beauty pageant. Title holders must have good public presentation, and work with everyone at the Fair. Good speaking ability is valued the highest. You have to have poise, speak well, and become part of the Fair image.”
Wolfe added, “Being Fair Queen means being able to represent the Fair and its community. It’s being involved in agriculture and community service. Being able to express yourself and let the community know what they can do to help is a really important part of it.”
“Madison was an incredible title holder. She was so active in countless opportunities at the Fair, she’s done a great job, and we’re all going to miss her,” said Manuel.
This year’s title holders can pick up their regalia and get their official portraits taken at the Fairgrounds office on Thursday.
“It’ll be interesting to see how this year’s title holders get involved with community service,” commented Wolfe, noting that with so much of the Fair moving online to work around the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of the typical opportunities for involvement have gone virtual this year.
“I’m sure they’ll find ways to get involved,” said Manuel. “The crown and sash turn into a microphone for you - you can really get out there and have lots of opportunities for community involvement.”
