Residents can learn where to find information about polling places, information about registration, answers to general voting questions and pick up voter registration forms. TOWN OF MALTA MEETING: The following Town committee meetings will be held at the Malta Town Hall, 2540 Route 9, Malta. Highway Safety Advisory Committee Meeting - Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020 at 3 pm. CONCERT IN THE PARK: The Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association has presented free summer events for the community for many years. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has curtailed the full schedule of concerts and movies, but the month of August will see a return to these events under NYS guidelines. The Concerts in the Park Series will present concerts on August 13 (The Lustre Kings), August 20 (The Bluebillies) and August 27 (Ballston Spa Community Band). Concerts will be held from 6-8 pm outside in Lions Music Park at the historic Iron Spring Park on Front Street. Hand sanitizer will be available to the public at all events. These events are contingent on public gathering restrictions currently in place. These events are free to the public. Social distancing measures, face masks and limited capacity in the parks for concert and movie spectators are required and will be followed. Event safety plans are posted on the concert and movie webpages on Ballston.org. HISTORICAL PROGRAM: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will continue to offer online programs throughout the summer even as the Visitor Center is now open by appointment. The Erie Canal historic site will provide programs through Webex as well as other online platforms and social media. On Thursday, August 13th at 6:30pm, join us via Webex as Schoharie Crossing hosts Schenectady City Historian Chris Leonard as he delivers a rollicking ride on the Erie Canal through Schenectady, from the Rexford Aqueduct to old Lock 23, the busiest transit point on the entire canal. Spend time with GE executives on boisterous pleasure cruises and hustle through backstreets with greenhorns desperately seeking whiskey. Travel with Leonard as he spins yarns of Schenectady’s unique characters, ne’er-dowell wharf rats, and foulmouthed parrots, who made their livings on the canal.

Additional programs are being planned. The site grounds are open for appropriate socially distant recreational use from sunrise to sunset daily. Please observe NYS Guidelines while visiting Schoharie Crossing. MUSEUM BALL: CANCELED - The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame announced it will cancel the 2020 Hall of Fame induction ceremony, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7, and the Museum Ball, scheduled for Aug. 14, as a result of the ongoing health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 inductees will be honored together with the class of 2021 next summer. The Museum Ball will also return to the calendar in 2021. ABENAKI WORKSHOP: On August 15, 1 - 4:30PM Jesse Bruchac of Ndakinna (Greenfield, NY) will bring his Introduction to Abenaki language workshop across the Hudson River, to Dionondehowa Wildlife Sanctuary & School, in Shushan - returning the ancient language to lands where it once was heard along the Battenkill and among the then-thickly hemlocked hills. Dionondehowa is a 217-acres forever-wild non-profit land trust bordering the Battenkill near Shushan, NY. A donation is requested for this program. VIRTUAL FILM DISCUSSION: Saratoga Jewish Community Arts, with Temple Sinai and the Jewish Federation of Northeastern NY, presents an online panel discussion on American Son, an adaptation of a Broadway play of the same name, Sunday, August 16, at 7 p.m. Participants should view the film ahead of time before logging in to the discussion. Written by Christopher Demos-Brown and directed by Kenny Leon, while not based on one specific real-life story, American Son explores the truth of the real issues that exist among law enforcement. nor, learn that their biracial 18 year old son, Jamal, a student about to enter West Point, was not actually arrested, but was shot by a Black police officer who had pulled over the teen and his friends after the officer had witnessed the driver – not Jamal – buying drugs. The boys exited the car without the officer’s instructions to do so, and he fired. The film received negative reviews, citing its social commentary on the subject of race as too heavy-handed. However, if you walk through the 90 minutes of this film, if you let yourself be in this nightmare, you cannot say that communities that are disenfranchised and that are in hostile relationships with police are overreacting. You must understand what the experience is when you allow yourself to spend an evening with this film. This is another in our SJCA summer series in which you view the film, American Son, ahead of time on Netflix or another outlet. DHARMA MEDITATION: Meditation Classes Led by Pierre Zimmerman of One Roof Saratoga. July 12-August 30, Sundays at 9 am on the SPAC grounds in the Saratoga Spa State Park. Dharma Meditation includes inspirational topics that support emotional, cognitive, and ethical wishes for wellbeing. This is a sitting meditation for 25 minutes with a silent break allowing people to stretch, followed by a second sitting, introduced by a brief talk. A discussion on the topic and some insights and reflections about the nature and commonality of our basic humanity is shared by attendees. This meditation is open to beginners and/ or those who have been meditating for awhile. There is no cost to attend, but a $10 donation per class is suggested. The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation is thrilled to present their summer series of historic walking tours while remaining safe and socially distanced. Summer Sunday Strolls will be offered every Sunday through Sept. 6 at 10:30 a.m. in various neighborhoods throughout the city. Tour topics this season highlight prominent women of Greenridge Cemetery, the celebrated area surrounding the Saratoga Race Course, and the historic Spa State Park, among many others. All Sunday morning tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Due to current restrictions in New York State, Summer Strolls will be limited to 20 guests, which currently is less than the maximum of 25 that is currently allowed, and tickets must be purchased in advance until otherwise noted. Everyone will be required to wear a mask and social distancing will be encouraged when possible. The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. BARRE CLASS FOR OLDER ADULTS: The National Museum of Dance is pleased to announce that Mary Anne Fantauzzi will be offering The Ageless Dancer Ballet Barre class for older adults again beginning August 17. This popular class was offered via Zoom to over one hundred participants in spring 2020. It will return for two more Zoom sessions on Mondays 2:00–3:00 pm from galleries within the National Museum of Dance. The class teaches classical ballet technique designed for participants ages 50+. The class will use a chair or ballet barre for support. Participants will remain standing throughout the class to promote core stabilization and balance. Ballet slippers or split sole sneakers and fitness attire are recommended. Session 1: August 17 – October 5 (no class September 7 or 28) | 6 classes via Zoom. Now What?” Speaker Brian Rhinehart, of Rhinehart Roots Genealogy, is a professional genealogist and speaker. He is a graduate of Boston University’s Certificate of Genealogy Research course and was recently featured in Family Tree Magazine. Civil War soldiers often left a rich genealogical paper trail. Many of these records are tucked away at the National Archives in Washington DC. Learn what records are available for your ancestors only at the National Archives, what records are online already, and how to access all of them.
