Fond memories recalled on ‘Champions TALK’ event
Discussion hosted by NY Race Track Chaplaincy
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. » Angel Cordero Jr. talked about his 12 straight riding titles and his nickname “The King of Saratoga.”
Dale Romans reminisced fondly about longshot Keen Ice’s thrilling victory in the 2015 Travers Stakes. Ramon Dominguez shared some of his favorite memories from a career that landed him in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame.
And Terry Finley talked about the thrills and benefits of Thoroughbred partnerships and the thrill of winning the Kentucky Derby with Always Dreaming.
All of that was covered in a “Champions TALK” roundtable discussion organized by the New York Race Track Chaplaincy, which made its premiere on Aug. 5 on the chaplaincy’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. The discussion, filmed at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs was moderated by former track announcer Tom Durkin.
Viewers were encouraged to make a donation to the chaplaincy.
The organization’s two annual fundraising events in Saratoga
Springs were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the discussion, the NY Chaplaincy also honored the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NYTHA) for its longtime dedication and support of the backstretch community at Belmont Park, Aqueduct Racetrack, and Saratoga Race Course.
“The roundtable discussion was really a fun event for both the participants and those who tuned in to see it,” said Humberto Chavez, the chaplain of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy.
“We hope that those who saw it and those who see it in the days and weeks ahead will consider making a donation because the needs of the backstretch workers are even greater in the midst of this pandemic.”
