SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. » Though New York state’s fairs aren’t open this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there’s one favorite fair feature that the public is invited to enjoy this year — the food.

The Schaghticoke Fair is presenting a Fair Food Take Out Week instead of its traditional end-of-summer fair.

During this event, a select group of local food vendors will offer their fair cuisine from 4 to 8 p.m. daily Thursday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 7 at the fairgrounds, which are located at 69 Stillwater Bridge Rd. in Schaghticoke. There is no cost for admission or parking.

Participating vendors including Herrington’s BBQ, Farmer’s Feed Bunk, Reggie’s Veggies, Jeanette’s Fried Dough and Wolf’s Concessions will serve up sought-after fair food delicacies such as barbecue chicken and tri-tip dinners, sausage and pepper sandwiches, eggrolls, burgers, hotdogs, cotton candy, candy apples, fried dough, fried Oreos, fried candy bars, apple cider donuts, slushies and ice cream.

“We have five local food vendors who basically provide fair food staples,” said fair manager

Carly Reyna Ostrander. “What we’re trying to do is still allow the community a safe opportunity to come out, get your fair food fix, and support these local businesses that quite honestly, the money they make during fair makes up a pretty significant amount of their annual revenue.”

The food is available for takeout, or picnic tables will be set up 10 feet apart, along with handwashing stations and signage reminding visitors to practice social distancing. Masks are required whenever guests are not able to maintain proper social distance. Customers may also enjoy their food in or near their vehicles in the parking lot.

“Hopefully people come and have dinner every night,” Reyna Ostrander said.

“We are glad the Fair Food Days will give residents a chance to visit the fairgrounds and enjoy some of the treats and dishes that make the Fair a great part of our county,” Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin said. “We encourage residents to come out and make some new memories at the home of this proud Rensselaer County summer tradition.”
