Hear the stories that have lived on in our city for hundreds of years. They will enchant, entertain and perhaps even scare you. Our 90-minute long walking tour will take you in search of the countless ghosts rumored to haunt the city. Total walking distance is less than a mile, covered at a very leisurely pace so that you can enjoy Saratoga’s many infamous ghosts and haunted locations. We are very respectful of the spirits we will encounter along the way. You will hear about and perhaps even meet Old Smoke who, it is said, haunts the old Canfield Casino, Angeline, known as the Witch of Saratoga, Hattie, who has been known to make appearances in her restaurant since her passing and several other spirits.To book a timeslot, visit hauntedsaratogatours.com.
FALL FEST: The Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association’s 19th annual Fall Fest will take on a whole new look this year, featuring a full weekend of reimagined fall festivities. Although attendees won’t see the traditional pumpkin rolling or annual costume parade, the 2020 eventwill include new activities that extend over a three-day period from Friday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 25 in downtown Saratoga Springs, with some virtual components. The festival is free and open to the public. Families can take part in a Great Saratoga Pumpkin Hunt and search a variety of downtown shops and restaurants for pumpkins decorated with scenes of historic local landmarks, painted by local artist Cathi Anne Cameron. Participants who find all 20 pumpkins, whichwill be visible from the outdoors, could win aprize. Participation forms are available in downtown shops and businesses as well as online, and must be dropped off by 5 p.m. on Sunday at Impressions of Saratoga, Caroline + Main or Northshire Bookstore to be entered to win one of three Downtown Saratoga Springs Gift Baskets valued at $200 each. Additionally, three nights of ghost tales will be toldby Joe Haedrich of Haunted Saratoga Tours. Each evening of the event at 6:30 p.m., Haedrich will be live on the Downtown Saratoga Springs Facebook page. Topics are: ”A Haunted Adelphi Hotel, “Ghostly Tales of the Arcade Building,” and “Spooky Olde Bryan Inn.” Downtown store windows will be decorated with festive themes and a variety of businesses will be offering “devilish deals” all weekend long. ONLINE FILM DISCUSSION: Saratoga Jewish Community Arts and Temple Sinai, with a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, presents a Zoom discussion of the classic film Do the Right Thing on October 25 at 7 p.m. The film explores how racial inequality drives conflict in a predominantly African American community onthe hottest day of the summer. It does not provide answers to the problems it exposes. Rather, the film reflects back to its audience their own perspectives on prejudice and compliance. The film was made as the result of provocations, and so it in turn provokes. It reacts to white supremacy and paternalism with a justified rage, drawing attentionto systemically racist institutions and the injustices they produce; injustices that still exist today. FREE CAR WASH WITH FOOD DONATION: For the 9th consecutive year, the staff at Hoffman Car Wash will be collecting food for local area food pantries. On Saturday, October 24th, and Sunday, October 25th, Hoffman Car Wash will provide a free car wash with a non-perishable food item donation. Hoffman Car Wash has partnered with 14 different food pantries to bolster the pantries’ food supply for the upcoming Thanksgiving rush. Each Hoffman Car Wash location will donate the collected items to a food pantry in its neighborhood. Items that are most needed include the following: canned meat or fish, canned entrees (stew, ravioli, etc.), canned fruit in juice, canned spaghetti sauce, canned soup, hot or cold cereal, canned 100% juice and peanut butterand jelly. To participate, individuals simply need to donate one non-perishable food item at any Exterior or Full Service location. PUMPKIN GLOW & LIGHT SHOW: Ellms Family Farm is launching a new fall themed attraction. The Pumpkin Glow & Light Show Drive-Thru is an enchanting Halloween experience that features a pumpkin wonderland with thousands of hand carved illuminated jack o’lanterns. Guests are invited to be immersed in the magic fromthe safety and comfort of their own vehicle. The DriveThru experience boasts single pumpkin carvings to larger than life dazzling light displays. Ellms Family Farm has partnered with master carvers that are bringing all of the Halloween spirit to life. In addition to marveling at the masterpieces created by talented artists, guests will have the opportunity to be able to enjoy all the Ellms Farms fall snacks they know and love, by preselecting and prepaying for tasty fall themed treats, food & beverages, again to be enjoyed from your vehicle. FIELD OF HORRORS: Local haunted attraction Field of Horrors will open for its Sneak Peek Weekend from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Sept. 25 and 26. It will then be open from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 2, 3, 9, 10 and 11 as well as 6 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 16, 17,23, 24,25, 30and31. This year’s event will feature five different attractions, including the all-new Dr. Morbid’s Haunted House. HOLLOWED HARVEST: ‘The Hollowed Harvest’ will feature 7,000 incredible Jack-O’-Lanterns creating stunning landscapes and larger-thanlife displays, some towering as tall as 3 stories, and spanning more than 60 feet in length! The Hollowed Harvest is scheduled to open September 25th at 6 p.m. at the Altamont Fairgrounds andwill continue Thursday through Sunday of each week through the beginning of November with additional dates added the week of Halloween. From dinosaurs to zombies, sea creatures to medieval castles, all made out of Jack-O’-Lanterns, you won’t believe what you’re going to see at the Hollowed Harvest! CANINE TRAINING CLASSES: – Saratoga County 4-H is excited to announce the canine training course will be held at the 4-H Training Center, 556 Middle Line Road, Ballston Spa this fall. Classes will be held on Monday nights starting October 26 and Wednesday afternoons starting October 21. This programis open to youth enrolled in Saratoga County 4-H, ages 12-18. This course offers youth canine handlers of all ages and training levels the opportunity to learn about positive reinforcement techniques to better their canine and handler team. Each handler will evaluate goals and objectives to work on for five consecutive weeks. The cost for all five sessions is $25. Dogs must be at least six months old and have current vaccinations for distemper and rabies. Send proof with registration. WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE IN SARATOGA SPRINGS: In this virtual education program by the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, Learn about the pivotal role Saratoga Springs played in the women’s suffrage movement and the history of women’s rights conventions from Nancy Brown. SCIENCE ON TAP: Please join urban ecologist Dr. Myla Aronson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources at Rutgers University, as she discusses “Restoring Nature in the Concrete Jungle” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 online via Zoom. The majority of humanity now lives in urban areas and the rapid urbanization of the world has a profound effect on global biodiversity. Dr. Aronson will discuss the status of biodiversity in the World’s cities, how cities can plan for biodiversity conservation, and restoration of plant species in urban landscapes. DISCUSSION GROUP: “The Election, The Supreme Court Nomination: You Have Questions, We Have Answers at The Troy Public Library” On Tuesday, October 27that 6PM, Professor Robert Whitaker, will lead a discussion group online presented using Zoom. How do presidential elections work? What is the Electoral College and why dowe have it? What does the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg mean for the future of the Supreme Court? How are justices appointed to the Court? Political Science Professor at Hudson Valley Community College, Robert Whitaker, will give a short presentation on presidential elections and the Electoral College, aswell as Supreme Court and judicial appointments, and then allow time for questions.
