‘FILL THE SHELVES’

Scouting for Food eventwill help food pantry

- Staff report

CLIFTON PARK, N. Y. » Scouts from around the southern Saratoga County are once again partnering with volunteers and community-minded citizens to help fill the shelves of the Shenendehowa Helping Hands Food Pantry, 963 Main Street, Jonesville.

The Scouting for Food Fund Drive is a national Scouting effort that takes place across the country each November. Because of the COVID- 19 pandemic, the Scouts have made a few changes from past years that will necessitate an extra effort on the part of those wishing to donate food items.

This year the campaign takes place from9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 14.

With a nod to the pandemic, the Scouts have dispensed with their preevent information door hangers. And instead of making collections on residents’ door steps, the Scouts have created six Food Collection Sites. The sites will be operated by various scouting units and their parents.

“Social distancing and limiting personal contact has created significant challenges but our Scouting families & Charter Organizations still have a desire to have positive impact on food insecurity within our community,” said Jim Swett, Charter Organization Representative from the Jonesville Church. “We are asking the community to make food and monetary donations at one of the six locations.”

Charter organizations sponsor the Scout units.

The Scouts will direct the community to where they can partially presort their donations into designated containers at which point the donations will be transported back to the pantry’s site, an annex of the Jonesville United Methodist Church.

“Unlike previous years we will not be gathering at the church to sort the food items into different categories. Instead, we will store the food in the kitchen and the pantry workers will be able to sort it at their convenience,” Jewett said.
