VIRTUAL WORKSHOP: Saratoga Clay Arts Center will present a virtual workshop from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18 called Constructing Multicomponent Forms: Handled Vases with Mike Stumbras. In this three hour workshop, Mike Stumbras will demonstrate making a multi-part vase with handles on the wheel. Mike will talk about the numerous technical and design oriented challenges with planning and constructing a complex and well balanced form. Including wheel throwing, altering, pulling handles and making attachments, as well as an overview of surface considerations such as slip trailing, water etching, spraying glazes and using gold luster. Mike will speak in depth about his design philosophy, elements of ceramic history, and the concepts that are central to his work. Included with the workshop are handouts containing clay and glaze recipes, as well as notes detailing crucial parts of his process. Registration is available online at www. saratogaclayarts.org.
HISTORY AT HOME: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is excited to announce its 2021 Virtual “History at Home” Winter Lecture series. The site will offer free online programs from January to March covering a range of interesting history topics. Links for the programs can be found on Schoharie Crossings NYS Parks webpage, on their Facebook, or by contacting the site. Hudson Valley Community College professor Matthew Zembo will provide a discussion on Feb. 18th titled, “The 34th Regiment of Foot: A British Regiment in the Northern Frontier of the American War of Independence.” Zembo will discuss how the regiment operated in a vastly different theater of war then those experienced in Europe, how civilians played a role, and what actions the soldiers engaged in during the fight to put down rebellion in New York. All the programs will begin at 6:30pm and are offered for free via the online platform, WebEx. The links for these programs go live at 6:20pm. The 7th Annual Hudson Valley Value-Added Grain School will feature expert speakers on grain storage management, a farmer panel to share expertise on grain storage, and expert speakers on heritage corn and small grain varieties. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany and Ulster Counties are holding this online meeting in four sessions on Feb. 18 & 25, 2021. Online meetings have proved to be a great way for participants to learn from experts and ask questions. Help for folks new to online meetings will be provided. Registration is free, but you must register at https://tinyurl. com/CCEGrainSchool2021. Grain storage management requires understanding grain, moisture, temperature, storage structures and systems. Fortunately, the basic principles of sanitation, loading grain, aeration, and monitoring (SLAM) apply to all storage systems. Dr. Sam McNeill, Univ. of Tennessee, a respected expert in grain storage, will review SLAM and give an update on new technologies for SLAM. Ken Wise, NYS IPM, will show us common grain storage pest insects and explain how to manage them. A panel of three progressive New York grain farmers will share their expertise in storing food and feed grains, certified seed, and managing organic grain storage. Shawn Shouse, Iowa State University Extension Field Engineer, will discuss “Above Average Grain Storage Management.” Lastly, Cornell experts share their expertise with heritage, ancient, and special varieties of corn and small grains. As the local grain economy grows, people are re-discovering varieties from the past that bring rich flavor to breads, tortillas, brews and other foods. FISH FRY: Knights of Columbus #246, located at 50 Pine Rd. in Saratoga Springs, will be hosting a Fundraiser Takeout Fish Fry each Friday in Lent, beginning Feb. 19 through April 2, from 5:007:30 p.m. The menu will include Fried or Baked Haddock - $14.00; Fried Clam Strips - $12.00 (these meals come with French Fries, Cole Slaw, Tartar Sauce, and Cocktail Sauce); Shrimp Salad Special (comes with French Fries and Cole Slaw), Homemade Macaroni and Cheese $5.00; New England and Manhattan Clam Chowder $7.00 (pint) or $13.00 (quart); Side of French Fries - $3.00; and Dessert - $2.00. WELLNESS WALK: On Monday, February 22nd at 10:30am Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be holding one of our bimonthly Wellness Walks! This is a great opportunity to enjoy winter out on the trails. Wellness Walks are geared towards gentle exercise and the enjoyment of nature and will be accessible for participants at basic fitness levels. The walk will depart from the Camp Saratoga North Trailhead kiosk. Pre-registration is appreciated as the program could be cancelled if there is bad weather. Snowshoes will be available for rental 15 minutes before the program; free for members, $3 for non-members. If there is no snow, the program will take place without snowshoes. The Wellness Walks are a bi-monthly activity with the next walk scheduled on March 8th. Mark Tarabula. In this virtual workshop Mark Tarabula will be demonstrating how he uses slump molds to create abstract sculptural objects. We will discuss how to build and use slump molds to work intuitively with leather hard slabs and create oneof-a-kind works. See how he avoids repetitive studio practices by utilizing multiple parts from the extruder, the wheel, and slab molds. He will also demonstrate how he uses glazes nontraditionally to create large masses on each work. At 5:30, we will take a break and enjoy a Quarantine Cocktail together and have Q & A. The New York State Archives is engaged in another collaboration with Ancestry on the digitization of NYS records, which were released in 2020. CDGS is very pleased to welcome Jamie Brinkman, an experienced archivist, to present on the recently digitized records which include: Prison and executive clemency records, Civil service employment cards and Grand Army of the Republic post rosters. Brinkman will also discuss the unique arrangement that the Archives made with Ancestry that allows NYS residents free access to these and other records without the need of an Ancestry subscription. HISTORY AT HOME: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is excited to announce its 2021 Virtual “History at Home” Winter Lecture series. The site will offer free online programs from January to March covering a range of interesting history topics. 4th, Schoharie Crossing educator David Brooks will present DeWitt’s Duel. The life of DeWitt Clinton is an interesting exploration into the politics of early America and New York State. Recognized now as the “Father of the Erie Canal,” NYS governor and former mayor of New York City, Clinton had tended to personal and political rivalries to accomplish legislative goals. Join in to discover some of the intrigue, wrangling, and dirty politics that lead ultimately to DeWitt’s Duel on the plains of Weehawken, New Jersey. All the programs will begin at 6:30pm and are offered for free via the online platform, WebEx. The links for these programs go live at 6:20pm. FISH FRY FRIDAY: Fish Fry Friday at the Fish Creek Rod and Gun Club is back from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday through April 10 at 123 Route 32, Victory Mills.
