Local Girl Scout Leah Gachowski of Ballston Lake was recently named a Gold Award Girl Scout, a designation she earned by working within her community to raise awareness for the need for handmade hats and blankets for newborns at Albany Medical Center.

The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable - earned by a Girl Scout who works to address an issue she’s passionate about in a way that produces meaningful and lasting change. Whether it’s on a local, national, or global level, Gold Award Girl Scouts provide innovative solutions to significant challenges.

Inspired by her own interest in knitting and crocheting, Gachowski created resources to involve others in learning and practicing these enjoyable skills while also making a difference for newborns and families. Her work will be continued by a group at Grace Chapel in Clifton Park to continue to provide these items to local hospitals.

The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national, and global challenges. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change.

“Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good—and Leah embodies everything this achievement stands for,” Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York CEO Brenda Episcopo said in a press release. “Leah addressed an issue that’s important to her—helping children and families—for her Gold Award, and we congratulate her on this momentous accomplishment.”
