Tuesday, Feb. 23 PRESERVATION FOUNDATION PROGRAM: February marks Black History month in the United States as a way to recognize the important contributions that African Americans have made to our country. As a way to highlight this important history in Saratoga Springs, the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation welcomes local author, educator, and musician Carol Daggs to speak about her family’s over 120year history as Saratogians featured in her book “Saratoga Soul Brandtville Blues.” Join the Foundation for this hour-long virtual program on Tuesday, February 23rd at 7PM on Zoom and Facebook Live. Daggs’ recent novel “Saratoga Brandtville Blues” is this year’s Saratoga Reads! selection from the Saratoga Springs Public Library. Her presentation, based on the book, will discuss the “Brandtville” in the east side of Saratoga Springs. This area was also known as the Gaslands for its high carbon dioxide levels from the mineral springs. Many residents of this area found employment in the grand hotels, restaurants, or at the racecourse. Carol focuses her narrative on her family’s rich farming history of this neighborhood and their subsequent story as the area changed over the decades. This program is open to the public for a suggested contribution of $10 and pre-registration is required to attend on Zoom. VEGETABLE GROWING:

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County will be hosting a Free Vegetable Growing Series via zoom. All classes in the series will be held from 12:15pm-1:15pm. On Feb. 23, join Jessica Holmes, Consumer Horticulture, for Container and Raised Bed Gardening to learn about which vegetables grow best in containers and how to start a raised bed garden. Saratoga Clay Arts Center will present a virtual workshop from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 called Breaking the Body with

Mark Tarabula. In this virtual workshop Mark Tarabula will be demonstrating how he uses slump molds to create abstract sculptural objects. We will discuss how to build and use slump molds to work intuitively with leather hard slabs and create oneof-a-kind works. See how he avoids repetitive studio practices by utilizing multiple parts from the extruder, the wheel, and slab molds. He will also demonstrate how he uses glazes nontraditionally to create large masses on each work. At 5:30, we will take a break and enjoy a Quarantine Cocktail together and have Q & A. GRAIN SCHOOL: 7th Annual Hudson Valley Value-Added Grain School. Thursday, Feb. 18, 10:30 AM - noon & 1 - 2 PM and Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021 11 AM – noon & 1 PM - 2:40 PM. Online via Zoom. The 7th Annual Hudson Valley Value-Added Grain School will feature expert speakers on grain storage management, a farmer panel to share expertise on grain storage, and expert speakers on heritage corn and small grain varieties. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany and Ulster Counties are holding this online meeting in four sessions on Feb. 18 & 25, 2021. Online meetings have proved to be a great way for participants to learn from experts and ask questions. Help for folks new to online meetings will be provided. Fortunately, the basic principles of sanitation, loading grain, aeration, and monitoring (SLAM) apply to all storage systems. Dr. Sam McNeill, Univ. of Tennessee, a respected expert in grain storage, will review SLAM and give an update on new technologies for SLAM. Ken Wise, NYS IPM, will show us common grain storage pest insects and explain how to manage them. A panel of three progressive New York grain farmers will share their expertise in storing food and feed grains, certified seed, and managing organic grain storage. Shawn Shouse, Iowa State University Extension Field Engineer, will discuss “Above Average Grain Storage Management.” Lastly, Cornell experts share their expertise with heritage, ancient, and special varieties of corn and small grains. As the local grain economy grows, people are re-discovering varieties from the past that bring rich flavor to breads, tortillas, brews and other foods. SLOW ROLL: A “Slow Roll” is a leisurely bike ride around Saratoga Springs with a group of bike enthusiasts while remaining socially distant and COVID conscious. You will see parts of Saratoga you may not have in a while and enjoy the company of others you love the outdoors and biking!

The ride will be guided by Bikeatoga looping through quiet and safe neighborhood streets. The pace will be suitable for families too! The winter “Slow Rolls” will last approximately 1 hour. Remember to dress warmly and wear a mask. Join in to discover some of the intrigue, wrangling, and dirty politics that lead ultimately to DeWitt’s Duel on the plains of Weehawken, New Jersey. HISTORY TALK: On Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway will discuss Troy and the Draft Riots of 1863 for the Troy Public Library. While the city of Troy was a bustling industrial center during the Civil War period, the lives of her workers reflected the same social, financial and emotional upheaval that had torn the nation apart. Local economic and political disparity had led to the early and successful organization of labor, and related political affiliations. These factors were compounded by the enactment of the first military conscription act in American history, which included provisions that many considered to be onerously weighted against the laboring class. This turmoil led to what has been called the second most destructive draft riot in the nation, necessitating some rather unusual governmental responses. This slide-illustrated lecture is a true story about the people and events that don’t always make it into the history books. This program will be conducted via zoom. Thursday, March 18 VIRTUAL HORSE SYMPOSIUM:

CCE Equine, a

division of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, is gearing up to host ist second Virtual Horse Symposium in March. This three-week program is offered for adult horse owners, business owners, and horse enthusiasts in the Capital Region and beyond. This year, classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday for three weeks starting March 16 and ending April 1. Topics include: Sound Development of Young Horses, An introduction to Liability Risks: New York’s Agricultural Tourism Act and Negligence in the Horse Industry, Equine Law: Legal Issues for Participants in the Horse Industry, and more. Each session will be hosted virtually at 7 p.m. via Zoom. In addition to the virtual classes, there will be an option for participants to receive educational packets with resources for each presentation. New this year, the event will include a Family Fun Equine Trivia Night on April 2 that promises to be a fun and educational experience. Anyone can join this interactive virtual event. To wrap up the series, Audrey Humphrey from Johnson Hall State Historic Site will present an exploration of Sir William Johnson and his connection to Fort Hunter on March 18th. Johnson was one of the largest landowners in New York by the mid-18th century and his influence in the Mohawk Valley is evident even to this day. As Superintendent of Indian Affairs, his connection to the Mohawk village of Tionondoroge and congregation at Queen Anne’s Chapel influenced the how the American Revolution played out in New York after his death in 1774. All the programs will begin at 6:30pm and are offered for free via the online platform, WebEx. The links for these programs go live at 6:20pm. CCE Equine, a division of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, is gearing up to host ist second Virtual Horse Symposium in March. This three-week program is offered for adult horse owners, business owners, and horse enthusiasts in the Capital Region and beyond. This year, classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday for three weeks starting March 16 and ending April 1. Topics include: Sound Development of Young Horses, An introduction to Liability Risks: New York’s Agricultural Tourism Act and Negligence in the Horse Industry, Equine Law: Legal Issues for Participants in the Horse Industry, and more. Each session will be hosted virtually at 7 p.m. via Zoom. In addition to the virtual classes, there will be an option for participants to receive educational packets with resources for each presentation. New this year, the event will include a Family Fun Equine Trivia Night on April 2 that promises to be a fun and educational experience. Anyone can join this interactive virtual event.
