GALWAY, N.Y. » A charitable trust created in the will of a Galway resident in 2006 is still going strong to benefit nonprofit organizations and projects in and around the community that he and his wife loved.

Its latest beneficiary is Galway Emergency Medical Services, which recently welcomes a new ambulance and equipment thanks to an almost $267,000 grant from the Dockstader Charitable Trust.

The Dockstader Charitable Trust was established to benefit the greater Galway community in accordance with the wishes of Galway Village residents Clayton R. Dockstader and his wife, Katherine Flickinger Dockstader.

The trust has long supported Galway Emergency Medical Services (GEMS), which serves the towns of Galway and Providence and the northern section of the town of Charlton. It is an Advanced Life Support Agency, with staffing 24/7. Prior to this latest gift, the Dockstader Trust provided GEMS with $180,000 over the years to pay off the mortgage for the corps’ building and cover the cost of past ambulances.

The new purchase for GEMS includes a Stryker Power Load System, which is used to load a specially designed cot into the new ambulance.

More than $2 million total in grants has been donated by the Dockstader Charitable Trust to other organizations, including four area fire departments, the Galway Public Library, and Saratoga PLAN. Other organizations supported by the trust include local churches, the Galway Central School, scouts, Lions Club, and the town and village. The total number of grants to date is almost 200.
