COUNTY GOVERNMENT PROGRAM:
The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County invites residents of Saratoga County to a virtual conversation about the structure of county government on Saturday April 17 at 1:30 pm. Much of the structure of county government remains the same as it did in 1791 when the very first meeting of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors took place at Mead’s Tavern in Stillwater. Earlier that year, the New York State Legislature passed a law creating Saratoga County by carving out an area from Albany County. At that time, the new county was divided between four towns, Ballstown, Halfmoon, Stillwater and Saratoga.
Over the course of 230years, many things have changed in our county government. The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors meets once a month rather than twice a year. The Board consists of 23Supervisors, a far cry from the 4present at the first meeting. At the meeting on April 17 we will look at some changes in the structure of government in the county, including an appointed County
Administrator and weighted voting, and at the last time the County looked at possible changes in County Government. We will hear from the Association of Counties representative about County government structures available in New York State from two women who have worked on County Charters in Albany County and Montgomery County in recent years. Join us on April 17 at 1:30 at our virtual meeting to examine how our Saratoga County is governed and some other options available. This online presentation is open to the public via Zoom, Please register in advance by going to the League website, http://www. lwvsaratoga.org and go to Events. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and to influence them through education and advocacy.

Auditions will be held through Zoom on Sunday, April 18 and Monday, April 19 from 7:00-9:00pm. All roles are open to actors of all ethnicities and gender identifications. Baruch de Spinoza is a young merchant and the heir apparent of Saul Mortera, the chief Rabbi of Amsterdam. When the city accuses Spinoza of atheism, he is summoned to the synagogue to defend himself. Spinoza’s best friend, his sister, and the woman he loves are all drawn into the controversy, a historical event that shook up not only the entire Jewish community of Amsterdam, but changed Spinoza’s and Mortera’s lives—and all of Western thought—irrevocably. The play is a re-imagining of the interrogation and eventual excommunication of the young philosopher on July 27, 1656. In this eloquent and masterful drama, David Ives attempts to open the temple doors and let us listen in on a dispute whose philosophical and political echoes still reverberate today. Production dates are Sunday, July 25 at the Congregation Shaara Tfille in Saratoga Springs, and Sunday August 1at the Congregation Beth Shalom in Clifton Park. There will be two performances each day. Rehearsals will start on Sunday, June 13 and will run Sunday through Thursday evenings. Appointments for the Zoom auditions will be required.
