Saratoga Springs, NY- James Edward Donohoe (b. January 31, 1942), beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully after a short illness on Friday, April 16, 2021 at the age of 79. He was born and raised in Saratoga Springs, NY and graduated from St. Peter’s Academy in 1960. He went on to get his bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD, and his master’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He grew up in Saratoga and spent his life here, raising his family. James, Jimmy, Jim, Jigs, Jigsy as he was known was well loved and respected in the community. He was a star athlete at St. Peter’s Academy and was inducted into the St. Peter’s Academy Hall of Fame. He also played basketball in college at Mt. St. Mary’s and was well known in the 1970s in the local Saratoga adult basketball league.

Jim had a long and varied career, including spending summers serving as a Pinkerton at the Saratoga Racecourse when he was younger. He was the Director of the Lab at Saratoga Hospital, an entrepreneur, a teacher at Saratoga Central Catholic High School, teaching Chemistry and Computer Science, and he worked in the lab at St. Peter’s Hospital before he retired. At SCCHS he was a baseball coach, a mentor and friend too many. Jim was an avid skier, something he taught his children early on, and spent many weekends with his family and close friends at Alpine Meadows/Adirondack Ski Center. He was an adventurous person, and never shied away from a challenge. Family was everything to him, he coached Little League and Babe Ruth teams, he rarely missed a game or match that his kids were playing in, and that theme continued as he supported his grandchildren. He would go out of his way to be sure he made it to a game, or show, or musical performance, even if it meant a long trip down to Albany, Vermont, New York City, or Virginia. There was never a prouder grandparent. He would do anything for his grandchildren, and one of his favorite things was to take them to early morning breakfast at the track to watch the horses warm up in the summertime.
