ALBANY, N.Y. » Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY) will join councils across the country for “Becoming Me,” a special collaboration between Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Penguin Random House and Former First Lady Michelle Obama.

The program follows the recent publication of Obama’s book “Becoming: Adapted for Young Readers” and offers a unique opportunity for Girl Scouts to embark on their journeys to become their best selves.

“Girl Scouts is about providing empowering programs to our girls and volunteers and we are so excited to be offering this inspiring opportunity,” said GSNENY CEO Brenda Episcopo. “Mrs. Obama’s message in ‘Becoming’ directly aligns with our mission to help girls build their personal strength, resilience and celebrate their unique voice.”

Becoming Me kicks off with a virtual event on May 6, during which the former first lady will explore the themes in her book as they relate to Girl Scouting and to young people’s experiences today. Following the virtual event, the program series will include a national service project and a six to eight-week experience built on 18 of the over 300 Girl Scout badges.

This experience will focus on core themes from the book that align with the Girl Scout mission, such as knowing and telling your story, maintaining mental health and wellness, and supporting and nurturing girls on their personal journeys.

“I am so pleased to be working with Girl Scouts of the USA on the Becoming Me program,” Michelle Obama said. “It is a joy and privilege to support young girls along their journeys of becoming, working together to unlock the unique and profound power that lies within each of our own stories.”

The Girl Scouts’ Becoming Me program is available at no cost to any interested girl or adult who becomes a member for the 2021-2022 membership year, and current Girl Scouts who renew for 2021-2022 during the month of April.

Registration for the virtual event with the former first lady is open until April 30.
