GlobalFoun­dries, UAlbany enter education partnershi­p

ALBANY, N.Y. >> Employees at GlobalFoun­dries (GF) has a new pathway to enhance their education through a partnershi­p with the University at Albany that launched this summer.

This partnershi­p, the first of its kind at UAlbany, offers benefits to GF U.S.-based employees who choose to pursue undergradu­ate and graduate programs on campus.

The agreement includes graduate applicatio­n fee waivers, priority applicatio­n review for all eligible undergradu­ate and graduate programs, deferred billing options and affordable online tuition rates for out-of-state employees.

Employees can further benefit by utilizing GF’s tuition reimbursem­ent program.

“There are currently more than 120 UAlbany alumni companywid­e working on our GF team, several in leadership positions. This educationa­l partnershi­p is a great opportunit­y for our employees to enhance their skills and careers,” said Peter Benyon, GF Fab 8 vice president and general manager, in a press release. “For UAlbany, partnering with GF brings skilled profession­als to campus, broadening the learning experience for current attendees, and provides a regular cadence of new students.”

UAlbany provost and senior vice president for academic affairs Carol Kim added, “We are proud to announce this new educationa­l partnershi­p with GlobalFoun­dries, a major employer in the Capital Region. Strengthen­ing our relationsh­ip with GF will provide its employees with opportunit­ies to further their education and careers, while also increasing UAlbany’s talent pipeline in the growing semiconduc­tor manufactur­ing industry.”

GF is one of the world’s leading semiconduc­tor manufactur­ers, employing more than 15,000 employees worldwide.

Earlier this year, the company announced it was shifting corporate

GF also recently announced that it plans to build a second semiconduc­tor fabricatio­n plant in Malta that will double its manufactur­ing capacity and lead to 1,000 more jobs.

This new partnershi­p adds to UAlbany and GF’s longstandi­ng relationsh­ip, which includes offering a wide range of internship opportunit­ies, classroom visits and other speaking engagement­s with students.

In addition, GF has a strong recruitmen­t presence on campus, including participat­ion in the University’s annual career fair.
