FASNY scholarship awarded to local student

- Staff report

WEST SAND LAKE, N.Y. >> The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has awarded the 2021 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Daniel McShane of West Sand Lake. McShane received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for his volunteer service in the community from Tim With, a member of the FASNY Board of Directors.

“This scholarship means a lot to me,” said McShane. “FASNY has been a big part of my college journey. Being selected for this scholarship will help me continue my college education.”

McShane plans to attend Utica College in the fall, where he intends to study psychology and play college football. Outside of the firehouse, McShane participates in student government, football, basketball, track, and weightlifting. Additionally, he also works with Best Buddies International and Unified Basketball to help create equal and empowering opportunities for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Out of all his extracurricular activities, McShane says that being a firefighter is his biggest passion.

When speaking of his experience as a volunteer firefighter, McShane said, “It has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I would encourage everyone to join. It has given me a lot of knowledge, friendships, perspective, and just a different take on life. I have built many strong relationships with all of the firefighters in my department, including my chiefs and line officers. In addition, I’ve been able to meet many different people in the fire service in neighboring departments or other first responders, police officers, EMTs, and paramedics.”

McShane is one of 26 students chosen for this scholarship. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.

The Gerard J. Buckenmeyer FASNY Volunteer Scholarship program is made possible each June through the generous donations of individuals, fire departments, and auxiliaries. This year, Provident Agency Inc., the provider of the accidental death and dismemberment insurance for FASNY members, has again provided major underwriting support to help FASNY award scholarships to young volunteers. FASNY would also like to recognize the in-kind support donated by McNeil and Co., which provides more than 80 hours of administrative work needed to process the applications and awards.
