COMPOSTING WORKSHOP:

Gardener’s Gold: Making Compost All Year. September 7 at 6 pm, Pitney Meadows Community Farm. Registration required. Gardeners are too often overwhelmed, confused, and discouraged by the “rules” of composting. Faced with an array of bins and barrels, we search for The One that will produce our coveted gardener’s gold. This workshop will present suggestions for cheap, easy, and effective compost strategies for the home gardener, and hopefully eliminate the frustration that so often stalls the quest for an abundance of perfect compost. Jennifer Armstrong, a lifelong gardener, got her start pulling weeds for $1 an hour in her parents’ garden. She has created four gardens in Saratoga Springs since moving here in 1987. She currently has a mixed garden of vegetables, perennials, shrubs and ornamental trees on the East Side, and zero grass. Her goal is to keep and recycle all the organic waste from her property, and reuse it to build soil fertility. Registration is available online at http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=cucm7kabb&oeidk=a07eigd7sz2f77d674b.

ANTIQUES SHOW: The plans are set, the dealers are signing up and we are excited to be back at the Schoharie Valley Railroad Complex on Depot Lane in Schoharie Village. On September 25 and 26, Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association will once again be hosting our annual Fall Antique Show. The dealers will be setting up on the grounds and in the buildings of this historic Railroad Complex. The backdrop is certainly one of the most unique to visitors. The Railroad Museum’s 1865 Station House and 1891 passenger car of the Middleburgh & Schoharie Railroad will be open to the public.

The freight shed, which houses all kinds of railroad memorabilia, including a restored 1917 Delaware & Hudson Railway caboose, will also be open to show-goers. The volunteers of SCHA are most anxious to be back to hosting our antique show! Our buildings and grounds will be filled with quality dealers who show and sell treasures from our past. There will also be a special exhibit and sale of Shirley’s Stoney Creek Quilts &Wovens on the second floor of the Creamery Building. This year we welcome the Heritage Artisans as well: the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker, the broommaker and the blacksmith, to mention a few. The cooks of SCHA have put together a selection of picnic items with our famous homemade desserts, should you want a great lunch under our picnic tent. Proceeds from the antique shows fund the ongoing historic activities of the Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association. Mark your calendar: Saturday, 9⁄25 from 10-5 and Sunday, 9⁄26 from 114. There is plenty of free parking.
