This workshop will present suggestions for cheap, easy, and effective compost strategies for the home gardener, and hopefully eliminate the frustration that so often stalls the quest for an abundance of perfect compost. Jennifer Armstrong, a lifelong gardener, got her start pulling weeds for $1 an hour in her parents’ garden. She has created four gardens in Saratoga Springs since moving here in 1987. She currently has a mixed garden of vegetables, perennials, shrubs and ornamental trees on the East Side, and zero grass. Her goal is to keep and recycle all the organic waste from her property, and reuse it to build soil fertility. NATURE CRAFT HOURS:

Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park is continuing to host Nature Craft Hours under the pavilion at Camp Saratoga every Tuesday throughout August and September!

This program runs from 4:00pm-5:00pm and is geared for children of all ages. Each Tuesday will feature a different and creative nature-themed arts project. The Ballston Area Seniors will be temporarily holding meetings at the Fitness & Cycle Gym, next to China City in the Hannaford Plaza 15 Trieble Ave. Milton. Starting this summer, we will be resuming our weekly meetings on every Thursday of the month. Doors will open at 10 am, for the sales of 50⁄50, crafter sales, socializing and cards. Revolving around discovering aquatic wildlife at Delegan Pond, this scheduled reoccurring program is taking place every Friday from 10:30am-11:30am. Participants can use the dip nets that are provided to search for pond life, including frogs, salamanders, tadpoles, crayfish, and aquatic insects. Registration is required. Space is limited. PATRIOT DAY PARADE:On Saturday, September 11, 2021, Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge No. 161will be celebrating the return of its annual Flag Day Parade under a new name for this year only. Last year’s Flag Day Parade was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and this year’s parade was postponed until September 11 in order to allow for the relaxation of COVID-related crowd size and social gathering restrictions.

This year’s parade will be called the Elks’ Patriot Day Parade, in recognition of the designation of September 11as Patriot Day by resolution of the U.S. Congress adopted on December 18, 2001. The Patriot Day Parade will be commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the 9⁄11 tragedy. Local first responders who assisted with rescue and recovery efforts after the Twin Towers fell will be recognized and celebrated as Honorary Grand Marshals of the parade. The theme of the parade will be “Honoring Our Community Heroes”.

The Elks plan to honor not only our brave local first responders who went to New York City twenty years ago, but also our local first responders, essential workers and hometown heroes who have been at the forefront of our community’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 9⁄11 CEREMONY OF REMEMBRANCE: At 10 am on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, located at 200Duell Rd. in Schuylerville will host a ceremony in remembrance of the attack on Sept., 11 2011. This event is to honor the victims of that day, as well as those who have lost their lives in the years since due to health issues from working on the rescue and recovery efforts. We also honor those who served in the military and made the ultimate sacrifice. Several of these men and women are interred in this cemetery. REPTILE EXPO: The Saratoga Reptile Expo is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11at the Saratoga Springs City Center. The expo will offer its largest selection of animals and supplies to date. More than 130 vendor tables will be set up, including about 60 breeders from all over the East Coast selling captive bred and long-term captive reptiles, amphibians, small exotic mammals, invertebrates (primarily arachnids, mantids, and leaf bugs), and feeders, as well as enclosures and care items for these animals. An education room will feature hands-on learning opportunities with zoologists and professional educators. Here, guest speakers will give presentations on various topics throughout the day. Presale tickets are being sold in hourly blocks to restrict the crowd to 50% of the capacity of the venue. Limited tickets may be available for sale at the door in accordance with Department of Health guidelines as of the day of the event. However, anyone interested in attending is encouraged to preorder tickets. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages six to 13, and admission for children age five and younger is free. HISTORICAL TOURS:

On September 11, 2021 the Lansingburgh Historical Society will open the Melville House for tours from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. We will also have a display of artifacts from the Boradaile which was the country residence, high on the hill overlooking Lansingburgh, of George W. Daws. The cost was over $100,000 back in 1887. (Perhaps $2.5 million in 2017 dollars) Also present to answer questions will be Helen Mancuso. Mrs. Mancuso is the daughter of the owners of the Boradaile when it was a beautiful, elegant restaurant. AG DRIVE-IN MOVIE NIGHT:

The Saratoga County Agricultural Promotion Committee presents Ag Drive-In Movie Night hosted at the Malta Drive-In. DUNKIN RUN: The Albany Jewish Community Center, along with help from the Albany Running Exchange (ARE), will host its 42nd Dunkin’ Run on Sunday, Sept. 12. This event will be the first in-person race in the Capital Region in over a year. Attracting runners of all ages throughout the Northeast, participants can choose whether they want to take part in a 5K, 10K, 15K or a children’s Munchkin’ Run race. All participants will receive a run packet containing a Dunkin’ Run shirt and other goodies. The first race starts at 8:20 a.m. and the children’s run, which will conclude the event, begins at 10 a.m. The Dunkin’ Run helps raise funds that directly support programs at the Albany JCC such as early childhood, afterschool and summer youth programs, and cultural and community programs. ARTS TOWN HALL: The Saratoga Springs Arts Commission, in partnership with Skidmore College, invites the community to the first in a series of four quarterly town hall style discussions with local arts leaders. The Arts Commission is excited to present information about our city’s vital and vibrant cultural landscape, and to provide an open dialogue with its leaders. HISTORY PRESENTATION: The Saratoga County History Roundtable will offer a presentation by Russ

VanDervoort, Waterford Town Historian, at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa on Thursday September 16 at 7:00PM. Russ will tell the story of a 150year old murder for hire plot that a newspaper called “The Most Damnable Murder Plot ever Ventilated!”, an event that unfolded in 1870-1871 that involved participants from throughout Saratoga County. SHEEP SHEARING CLINIC:

Saratoga County 4-H is offering a Sheep Shearing Clinic this fall to youth ages 10 and older. The event will take place at the 4-H Training Center on Middleline Road in Ballston Spa on September 16, at 5pm. This clinic will exhibit the art of sheep shearing and preparing wool breeds for show. Participants will be provided a hands-on learning experience from professional shearer Siri Swanson of Yankee Rock Farm. Space is limited and expected to fill quickly. Payment of $5/ family is required at entry or prior to the clinic. The event is free of charge for 4-H members and their families. Saturday, Sept. 18 FEAST OF THE FIELDS:

Saratoga PLAN’s 15th annual Feast of the Fields is taking place on September 18th at the picturesque Old Tavern Farm in Stillwater. The Tuscan-themed picnic event will celebrate the region’s agricultural bounty while raising funds to support PLAN’s ongoing efforts to conserve farmland and open space in Saratoga County. Feast of the Fields is a community celebration of farmland and the rural character of Saratoga County, which remains strong partly due to Saratoga PLAN’s conservation efforts. This year, a select number of chefs will craft complementing dishes to create a picnic experience like no other. Tuscan inspired appetizers, meat and vegetarian entrées, mouth-watering side dishes and desserts will transport your taste buds from the stunning grounds of Old Tavern Farm to the bucolic countryside and rolling hills of Tuscany. In keeping the health and safety of guests and community members in mind, a to-go option is available for individuals and families wishing to enjoy their picnic meal from the comfort of their home or at another favorite picnic spot. A digital silent auction, featuring exciting experiences and eye-catching items will be running from Sept. 11 through the evening of Sept.18, with certain items onsite for in-person viewing. GIANT GARAGE SALE:

St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford will again have their Giant Garage Sale on Saturday, September 18th both indoors and outdoors in the Parish Hall located on the corner of Sixth and Division Streets. The sale will run from 9:00 to 5:00 with early birds welcome from 8-9 am at a cost of $5per person. Donations will gratefully be accepted on the following dates only: Tuesday, Sept. 14th, Wednesday, Sept. 15th and Thursday, Sept. 16th from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm each day. No electronics or clothing, please. Books are appreciated, but no encyclopedias or magazines. Jewelry, home furnishings, linens and bedspreads, furniture and holiday decorations are particularly appreciated.

Sunday, Sept. 19 DHARMA MEDITATION:

Dharma Meditation with Pierre Zimmerman has returned to an in person or live format at Caffe Lena! Meetings are held Sundays from 9 — 10:15am. Masks must be worn at all times, and coronavirus safety measures, including distancing, will be practiced. Donations are appreciated! Dharma Meditation includes inspirational topics that support emotional, cognitive, and ethical wishes for wellbeing. This is a sitting meditation for 25 minutes with a silent break allowing people to stretch, followed by a second sitting, introduced by a brief talk. A discussion on the topic and some insights and reflections about the nature and commonality of our basic humanity is shared by attendees. FARMERS MARKET:

The Mechanicville Library, located at 190 N. Main St. Mechanicville, will be holding its 2021 Farmers Market on Mondays from 4pm — 7pm from June — September. This producers market will feature vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, handmade items, and entrepreneurs. Limited free space is still available to our local producers. NATURE CRAFT HOURS:

Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park is continuing to host Nature Craft Hours under the pavilion at Camp Saratoga every Tuesday throughout August and September! This program runs from 4:00pm5:00pm and is geared for children of all ages.

Each Tuesday will feature a different and creative nature-themed arts project. Activities are TBA but have included sun prints, natural tie dye, seed medallions and more! Please note, there is a craft supply fee of $3 per participant. Participants should park in Parking Lot #1 located on Scout Road directly across the street from the pavilion. LIBRARY VOTE: The Friends of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library urge residents of our Library District to support their Library by voting on the 2022 Budget Proposal at the Library on Thursday, September 23, 2021, from 7am to 9pm. Enjoy light refreshments provided by the Friends throughout the day in the Library Café. The Friends will also have a Two Towns — One Book display table located on the Main floor under the stairs. BALLSTON AREA SENIORS MEETINGS:

The Ballston Area Seniors will be temporarily holding meetings at the Fitness & Cycle Gym, next to China City in the Hannaford Plaza 15 Trieble Ave. Milton. Starting this summer, we will be resuming our weekly meetings on every Thursday of the month. Doors will open at 10 am, for the sales of 50⁄50, crafter sales, socializing and cards. At noon lunch, at 12:30a General meeting will be held and Bingo will follow the meeting. On the second Thursday tickets will be on sale for $3 for the meal on the third Thursday. Or bring your own lunch on this day. All other Thursdays of the month bring your own lunch.
