League of Women Voters elects five new board members

SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. » The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County, at its recent annual meeting, elected five new board members and reviewed the local organizati­on’s accomplish­ments while looking ahead to the future.

Christine Alexander, Mandy Herrington, Patricia Partello, Quency Rene, and Almeda Riley were elected to serve as board members as of July 1. They join the board of nine others whose terms continue until 2023. Current board member Susan Hamlin joined the Steering Committee to serve with Monica Seebode and Ann Marie Pendergast.

An annual report highlighte­d the league’s accomplish­ments in 2021 and 2022, including:

• Providing testimony to the Independen­t Redistrict­ing Commission, advocating that community input be considered in the drawing of district lines.

• Coordinati­ng candidate forums for the general election, village elections, and school board elections. There were 3600 online views of these forums.

• Creating an online voter guide for 103 local and county races, serving over 5,500 users.

• Advocating for the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York, which is now the strongest voting rights act in the country.

• Registerin­g voters at 13 locations on National Voter Registrati­on Day as well as at various events throughout the county throughout the year.

• Creating a “Teach Me to Vote” video for students, available to teachers throughout New York State.

• Sponsoring speakers on racism in America, the Equal Rights Amendment, voter suppressio­n, climate challenges, plastics and solid waste, the census and redistrict­ing.

• Meeting with local leaders on issues related to criminal justice and more open public meetings, including remote access.

Members also offered direction to the board in the 2022-23 year. This included studying countywide developmen­t, and advocating for voting rights across the country and for the Equal Rights Amendment.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisa­n political organizati­on that encourages informed and active participat­ion in government. Membership in the Saratoga County LWV totals more than 200 people.
