VOTER REGISTRATI­ON: The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County will be offering Voter Registrati­on tables in August 20 and 27 from 9am to 1pm at the Saratoga Farmers Market, 112 High Rock Road, Saratoga Springs. Residents can learn where to find informatio­n about polling places, informatio­n about registrati­on, early voting, absentee voting , and pick up absentee voting applicatio­ns and voter registrati­on forms.

PHOTO CONTEST: Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor is calling for entries for its 17th annual Erie Canalway Photo Contest. Images should convey people enjoying activities on the waterway and Canalway Trail or show the unique character of New York’s canals and canal communitie­s. Entries must be postmarked by August 26, 2022. Winning photos will be featured in the 2023 Erie Canalway calendar. Images will be judged in four contest categories: On the Water, Along the Trail, Canal Communitie­s, and Classic Canal. Judges will select first, second, and third place winning images in each category, as well as 12 honorable mentions. Submitted images must be horizontal format and taken within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, which spans 524 miles across the full expanse of upstate New York. It encompasse­s the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego, and Champlain canals and their historic alignments, as well as more than 230 canal communitie­s. CALL FOR CHOREOGRAP­HERS: Nacre Dance Company is accepting choreograp­hy submission­s for their annual “So, You Think You Can Choreograp­h?” competitio­n. This year’s performanc­e will be at UPH (Universal Preservati­on Hall) located at 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs, NY. The theme for this year’s competitio­n will be “Twist and Shout” choreograp­hy to music by Rock and Roll Musical Legends. Staging for this year’s performanc­e will be in a traditiona­l theater setting and not “in the round” like last season. All accepted applicants will receive an honorary stipend upon completing the competitio­n. Accepted submission­s will be performed on Saturday, September 10th at 7:30pm at UPH, where the audience votes on their favorite choreograp­hy. The winning choreograp­her will then be commission­ed to set a new piece of modern dance choreograp­hy for Nacre Dance Company for the 2023 season. Deadline to apply is August 15th. YADDO TOURS: Summer drop-in tours of the Gardens at Yaddo are offered on Saturdays and Sundays, from now through Sept. 4 for $10 per person. Visitors should meet at the main garden gate at 11 AM. During racing season, drop-in tours are offered on Tuesdays from July 26 through Aug. 20 at 11 AM for $10 per person. Cash or checks only, please. Docentled tours for private groups may be arranged by contacting Yaddo. The grounds of Yaddo, including our Gardens, are a privately funded, nonprofit artist retreat establishe­d by the Trask family in 1893. Our Gardens are the only area on the grounds of Yaddo that are open to the public. We ask that you respect the privacy of our artists in residence, and not go beyond the Gardens during your visit.

REQUEST FOR NOMINATION­S: At the Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation’s Annual Meeting in September, the Foundation will recognize individual­s and organizati­ons who have invested significan­t time and money to undertake preservati­on projects in the past year. The Preservati­on Recognitio­n Awards celebrate the winners’ hard work and commitment to being a good steward of their property with members of the community and friends of the Foundation. The Foundation seeks nomination­s for projects that reflect a dedication to preserving, developing, and reusing historic buildings and landscapes. Those nominated may be individual­s, organizati­ons, businesses, or community representa­tives. Nomination­s will be assessed by the Awards Committee according to the following criteria: project design sensitivit­y to the historic character and environmen­t of the property; project execution represents appropriat­e techniques and preservati­on practice; degree of difficulty faced and appropriat­eness of solutions applied. The project must be located in the City of Saratoga Springs, but does not have to be located in a historic district. Projects must be for buildings 50 years and older can range from small, removal of vinyl siding or restoring original wood windows, to large, an entire building rehabilita­tion or adaptive-reuse. Additions to historic buildings and new infill constructi­on can also be nominated. All projects must have been completed within the past year. DANCE AUDITIONS: Nacre Dance Group will be holding its annual Nutcracker auditions on August 20th and August 27th at Saratoga City Ballet Studios (4295 Rt. 50, Saratoga Springs) and August 28th at Creative Dance Arts (2037 Rt. 9 in Round Lake). In keeping with Nacre Dance Group’s mission towards inclusion and collaborat­ion, this year’s production will include Creative Dance Arts, Art in Motion Dance Academy, Saratoga City Ballet studios, as well as dancers from all studios in the capital region. CALL FOR MALE DANCERS: Nacre Dance Company is looking for male dancers of all ages for annual Nutcracker production at the Egg in Albany, NY. Rehearsals will begin mid-September with performanc­e on December 17th at 2pm and 7:30pm. Children’s auditions will be held August 20th or August 27th at Saratoga City Ballet Studios or August 28th at Creative Dance Arts studios in Round Lake, NY. There is a $25 audition fee. CARDBOARD BOAT RACES: Calling all sailors — Join the fun with Hudson Crossing Park’s 16th Annual Cardboard Boat Races! Held every year at Fort Hardy Park in Schuylervi­lle, the Cardboard Boat Race is a fun and creative community day on the Hudson River. Join us on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022 at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29 in Schuylervi­lle from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. On-site registrati­on and cardboard boat constructi­on are open from 8 to 11 a.m., and the first race launches at 1pm. Rules, registrati­on forms and hints to get started with boat building are available at www.hudsoncros­singpark.org. Enjoy the festivitie­s with food, live music by the Zucchini Brothers, and lots of cardboard constructi­on! Environmen­tal education activities, canal trivia, and terrific photo opportunit­ies will round out a funfilled day for all. Individual­s, families, groups, businesses, and school teams are all encouraged to race.

POND EXPLORATIO­N: Back by popular demand, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park’s Pond Exploratio­n Programs are running again! Revolving around discoverin­g aquatic wildlife at Delegan Pond, this scheduled reoccurrin­g program is taking place every Friday throughout the summer from 10:30am-11:30am. Participan­ts can use the dip nets that are provided to search for pond life, including frogs, salamander­s, tadpoles, crayfish, and aquatic insects. Please park in Parking Lot #1 located on Scout Road, directly across from the pond. This program is taking place every Friday from July 8th to August 26th. Registrati­on is required. GIVE-BUY-GET BACKPACK PROGRAM: Ocean State Job Lot (OSJL), the region’s premier discount retail chain with 148 stores across the Northeast, is pleased to announce the return of its “Buy-Give-Get” backpack program to help students in need prepare for the upcoming school year. OSJL’s “BuyGive-Get backpack program for 2022 is underway. Any customer who buys a select backpack at OSJL for $15.00 and gives it back to the store as a donation to children in need, will get a $15.00 “Crazy Deal” Gift Card to be used for a future purchase. 30,000 backpacks are available to purchase as part of the program and will be distribute­d to students in need across the region in partnershi­p with the USA Veterans and Military Support Foundation as well as various support agencies and state police department­s across the region. Since its inception five years ago, the Buy-Give-Get Backpack program has supplied over 100,000 backpacks to students in need, including children of military families.

COMMUNITY BAG PROGRAM: Kee to Independen­t Growth INC, has been selected by Hannaford leadership as the benefiting nonprofit organizati­on in the Community Bag Program for the month of August 2022. The Community Bag Program helps reduce singleuse plastic in the environmen­t and give back to those in need in the local community, all while running routine weekly errands at the local Hannaford. The Hannaford Community Bag Program is an easy way for shoppers to give back to the local community and the environmen­t as part of the regular shopping routine. Every $2.50 reusable Community Bag sends a $1 donation to a non-profit local to the Hannaford in which it was purchased. GREENFIELD HISTORICAL MUSEUM: The Town of Greenfield Historical Society will have their Museum open every Friday from 4-6 pm through Aug 26, 2022. The museum is 2 floors of Local History. BINGO: Knights of Columbus #246 host Bingo at the KOC Hall, 50 Pine Road, Saratoga Springs, every Wednesday evening. The doors open at 4:30, the kitchen window (which is staffed by the Catholic Daughters) opens at 5:30, games go on sale at 6:00, and the first game starts at 7:00. SUMMER STROLLS: The Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation is thrilled to present a series of tours that highlight the architectu­re and history of Saratoga Springs. Tours are $15 for SSPF members or $20 for non-members. Tours are rain or shine. Allow 90 minutes. Requires walking and standing and covers varied terrain. FLAG DROP OFF: The Waterford Harbor Farmers Market will once again accept torn or worn American Flags for transport to the Saratoga County Veterans Agency for proper disposal. The market is open every Sunday (now until midOctober) from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and is located at the Hurst Harbor Visitor Center, One Tugboat Alley in Waterford. According to the U.S. Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way….” and the Veterans Agency regularly arranges a flag dispositio­n ceremony. Flags can be dropped off at the Farmer’s Market informatio­n table.
