Back- to- school immunizati­on clinic set Friday

GC Health Unit holds immunizati­on clinic

The Garland County Health Unit will hold a backtoscho­ol immunizati­on clinic from 8 a. m. to 5: 30 p. m. Friday at 1425 Malvern Ave. Appointmen­ts can be made by calling 624- 3394.

Parents should have their child’s shot records and insurance cards with them. If the child does not have insurance, the vaccines will be provided at no charge.

Oaklawn Rotary will provide hot dogs, chips and soft drinks.

The Arkansas State Board of Health implemente­d several changes to the school- entry immunizati­on requiremen­ts last year that include, but are not limited, to the following:

• Children 11 years of age or older must have one dose of vaccine to prevent tetanus, diphtheria and Pertussis ( Tdap vaccine).

• K- 12 children must have two doses of varicella ( chickenpox) vaccine or provide an official report for history of disease by a medical profession­al.

• All seventh- graders will be required to have one dose of MCV4 ( Meningococ­cal) vaccine with a second dose given at age 16.

Transition Employment Program graduates 28

Rising seniors from across the state will graduate from the Transition Employment Program today at 2 p. m. in the Hot Springs Convention Center.

TEP is a project designed to give rising seniors the vital skills and knowledge to transition from high school to adult life. The ceremony will honor the 28 students graduating from the program.

The program is in its second year. It is a partnershi­p of the Arkansas Transition Project and the Arkansas Career Training Institute.

Students underwent various assessment­s during the five- week period to gauge their strengths. They also obtained industry certificat­ions and participat­ed in internship­s. The project is designed to help students with disabiliti­es gain lifelong career- readiness skills and prepare them for a paid work experience next summer.

City streets closed for utility projects

The southbound lane of Malvern Avenue, from Convention Boulevard to Church Street, will be closed today through Friday for fiber optic cable installati­on.

Signs will be posted and flaggers will be present to direct traffic. Motorists should use caution when traveling in the area.

The closings of Scott Street, between Leawood and Mote Streets, and Leawood Street, from Scott Street to Vista Avenue, have been extended through today.

Signs will be posted, and motorists should seek alternate routes.
