Reddies start practice, set scrimmage Tuesday

ARKADELPHIA — Henderson State started preseason football practice here Thursday with about 160 players going through an extensive morning workout.

“The first five days of camp we will do the same things over and over again to get the guys moving in the right direction, learning the basics so that hopefully we will be ready for our season opener,” said head coach Scott Maxfield after practice.

“I think we did a lot of good things, but of course on the first day there’s going to be a lot of mistakes, with several guys going the wrong direction due to having a lot of young guys out there,” the Reddie coach said. “Overall it was a good day. We saw some good things, the kids are in pretty good and we got fortunate with the weather.”

Maxfield said the main goal early is installing the base offensive and defensive schemes before the team begins practicing in full pads Monday.

“We need to make sure everyone has an understanding on what they are supposed to do on both sides of the ball,” Maxfield said. “We have a lot of young guys and they need to be ready.”

The Reddies’ first scrimmage is 7 p. m. Tuesday. HSU’s season opener is Thursday, Sept. 3 at Southeastern Oklahoma ( Durant) with a 6: 10 p. m. kickoff. The Reddies’ first home game is Thursday, Sept. 10 against East Central with a 7 p. m. start at Carpenter- Haygood Stadium.
