Army Reserve Lt. Col. Andreas “Andy” Thum, of Hot Springs, recently graduated as a member of the class of 2016 at the National War College, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., where he earned a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy.

Thum, a 1988 graduate of Hot Springs High School, was one of only three Army Reserve officers chosen by the Army Reserve to attend National War College in 2016. One of only eight Senior Service Colleges sponsored by the Army, the National War College is focused on educating future leaders of the Armed Forces, Department of State, and other civilian agencies for high-level policy, command and staff responsibi­lities by conducting a senior-level course of study in national security strategy.

Thum has more than 24 years of service in the Army Reserve. He currently serves as one of approximat­ely 16,000 Army Reserve Soldiers on full time active duty who support the nearly 195,000 member Army Reserve.

Thum received his officer commission from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Oklahoma, while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, with a minor in German. Additional­ly, he earned a Master of Science degree from Arkansas State University and received a graduate certificat­e from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherland­s.

Thum lives in northern Virginia with his wife and son. He is a human resources officer currently assigned as the Secretary of the General Staff, Office of Chief of Army Reserve, Fort Belvoir, Va.
