Kudos to library

-

Dear editor:

I’m new to Hot Springs, but I’ve been a regular user of libraries in many cities and on eight college campuses. Most libraries I’ve used are good, but the one in Garland County is great! In addition to making the world of books available to me, it is like a community center. I’ve found the staff to be consistently helpful and well trained.

I’ve attended public meetings there on items of interest to me. I’ve observed that it is well used by people of all ages and backgrounds. It has helped me check out books from other libraries, loaned me movies and audiotapes, helped me meet other people whose interests are similar to mine, connected me to other community groups like the historical society and the native plant group. It publishes a monthly calendar of activities that is a smorgasbord of activities to choose from.

One set of activities is the hosting of at least four monthly book clubs. These clubs allow people to read and discuss a different book each month. I’m a member of The Interesting Book Club. I don’t enjoy all the books we choose to read, but even when I don’t like the book, I find the discussion lively, engaging and insightful. This month we are reading Margot Shetterly’s “Hidden Figures,” a true story about black women who are mathematicians in the space industry. A great read.

Kudos to all those who work to make the library the stimulating place it is.

Peace and birds, Jerry Butler Hot Springs
