Local ministers to join for Good Friday service
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — A community-wide Service of Darkness will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Good Friday in Barcelona Road Baptist Church, 390 Barcelona Road. Joining the host church’s staff will be additional ministers from six local congregations who will also participate.
Under the direction of Minister of Music Duane Blakley, the BRBC Choir, its orchestra and guest singers from nine other churches will lead the musical portions of the service. The major work will be “The Living Last Words,” by Ruth Elaine Schram, based on the seven final utterances of Christ from the cross. A spoken commentary by the ministers will accompany the sections as each of seven candles is extinguished, leaving the room in total darkness.
The symbolism of extinguishing candles is intended to underscore the gradual and deepening spiritual darkness as Jesus’s death becomes imminent and then final. But, the service will reach a triumphant climax as the lights come up full and the congregation joins in singing “Victory in Jesus” and “What Wondrous Love Is This.” Also included in the service will be “Christ, We Do All Adore You” from the well-known setting of “The Seven Last Words,” by Dubois.
Doors will open at 6 p.m., and since seating is limited, early arrival is advised. Admission is free and childcare will be provided.
