Host LH teams poised to score highly in meet
Lake Hamilton, the host team, has the leading qualifier in several events at the Class 6A track championships Thursday at Wolf Stadium.
Sophomore Haze Farmer is second in the state in the boys’ pole vault with a spring best of 16-2 from last week’s 6A-West meet at Greenwood. Classmate Michael Harris is the second-leading 6A qualifier at 15-6. Springdale Har-Ber senior Zach McWhorter cleared 17 feet at the Class 7A-West meet last week. Nick Johnson, in his senior year at Lake Hamilton, set the overall record of 17-3 at the 2016 Class 6A meet in Benton.
Lake Hamilton sophomore Knowledge Hood has the fastest 6A qualifying time in the boys’ 400-meter dash, 50.16
seconds. Lake Hamilton is the leading 6A qualifier in the boys’
4x800 relay (8:06.15), just behind state leader Harrison.
A battle in the boys’ shot put is likely between Russellville’s Matt Campbell (state spring best of 56 feet, 6 inches) nd Lake Hamilton’s William Burgess (519.25).
Lake Hamilton junior Josie Carson, a three-time Class 6A cross country champion, is the favorite in the girls’ 1,600 after a spring best of 5:15.44, ranking No. 4 in the state this year. Carson also is the leading 6A qualifier in the 3,200 (11:36.74). State leaders this spring are Fayetteville’s Rebecca Boushelle in the 1,600 (5:04.01) and Lonoke’s Gracie Hyde in the
3,200 (11:14.38), Boushelle and Hyde each ranking second in the other event.
Lake Hamilton’s Edie Murray is the meet favorite in the girls’ pole vault with a spring best of 12-8, No. 2 in the state this spring. Rachel Milnes, of Nettleton, with a spring best of 13-2, won the Class 5A championship Tuesday in Harrison going 12-6, Hot Springs’ Katie Meyer placing second.
