Mother’s Day Cookout Saturday at Family Park

S.I.S.T.E.R.S. will host a Mother’s Day Cookout from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Family Park. Bring grills and family. DJ will be Clinton Coleman.

Local resident to speak at health expo Thursday

Jamesetta Smith, of Lupus Foundation of Arkansas Inc., will speak on “Quality of Life, Living with Lupus” at 9:30 a.m. Thursday during the “Building a Healthy Arkansas: Strategies to Improve Health in the Natural State” expo at Crowne Plaza Hotel, 201 S. Shacklefor­d Road, Little Rock. She will speak in the Thomas room located on the first floor.

Poetry group studies play, current politics

The Shakespear­e poetry study group will meet at 2 p.m. Monday in Room C at Garland County Library. The subject this month and next month is poetry in the play “Julius Caesar.” There are several events and characters that parallel things happening in the political scene in the U.S. now which should be of interest to many.

Those who have not joined the group are welcome. No text required. No cost. The group meets monthly, except in August and December. John Crawford, professor emeritus of language and literature at HSU, leads the group. He has three published books on Shakespear­e and articles in regional and national journals.

HSV radio club hosts volunteer examiner test

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE – Hot Springs Village Amateur Radio Club will sponsor a volunteer examiner testing session

at 9:15 a.m. May 13 in Room D at Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave.

The doors open at 9 a.m. Anyone interested in upgrading their amateur license or obtaining a new one is welcome. Call Bill Stewart, WA9AQQ , at 915-0976, for informatio­n or to register.

Upgrade candidates are required to bring a photo ID, their original signed amateur license and any applicable CSCEs. A processing fee of $15 will be collected. Unlicensed candidates need only bring the photo ID plus the fee.

AAUW meeting to be Southern-style tea

The Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village branch of AAUW will have a social event, full-lunch Southern-style tea at noon May 17 at Grand Lagniappe Shoppe. Cost is $18. The public is welcome. There will be time to browse the store.

Emblem Club hosts taco salad dinner

Hot Springs Emblem Club

194 will host a taco salad dinner with all the fixings at 6:30 p.m. May 16 at Hot Springs Elks Lodge 380, 132 Abbott Place. Cost is $10 per person. Takeouts will be available.
