The program will feature Mary Brennan, West Zone archeologist for Ozark-St. Francis National Forests in Clarksville. Her presentation is titled “The 2017 Training Program: Investigations Along the Mulberry River, Franklin County, Ark.”
The 2017 Arkansas Archeological Society’s Training Program will take place on Ozark NF lands, exploring two sites that are believed to be a part of a larger cultural landscape reflecting Woodland to Mississippi period development in this region. Sites located along the Mulberry River near Cass seem to reflect a discrete cultural landscape that includes at least one mound site, several rock shelters, rock art sites, an argillite quarry and river terrace sites that may have served as hamlets or small villages. Two of these river terrace sites are the focus of this year’s training program dig. Preliminary data gathered suggests they hold promise as sources of potential information on Woodland and Mississippian cultural developments. Brennan will speak about the sites, what is expected to be found and research goals.
Brennan holds both a M.A. and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Arkansas. Her research interests primarily focus on the Ozark uplands and include thematic mapping of prehistoric and historic landscapes, settlement patterns and processes, kinship and historical memory and identity.
Brennan will co-direct the training program with Tim Mulvihill, Arkansas Archeological Survey Station archeologist at UA Fort Smith.
