Garvan Woodland Gardens recently announced its activities for June. All events are at the botanical garden, 550 Arkridge Road, unless otherwise noted.

Art exhibits
Art exhibits in the Magnolia Room are free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
• “The World As We See It,” June 1-31.
Held over from May, co-owners of Gallery 726 in downtown Hot Springs, Shirley Anderson, Barbara Seibel and Caryl Joy Young, share their works in “The World As We See It,” featuring interpretations of special places in Garvan Woodland Gardens in a variety of mediums including pastels, watercolors, oils, and acrylic, and other scenes from their extensive travel and experiences.
Special events
• Saturday Docent Tours, Saturdays through June 30, 10-11 a.m.
Specially trained volunteer docents lead a group through the garden’s most beautiful landscapes, bringing attention each week to areas that are at their peak for the visit. Learn about the history of the garden and Lake Hamilton, interesting plants to grow at home, and the state’s woodlands. Admission is free for members and children ages 3 and younger, $15 for adults, and $5 for children ages 4-12. Groups are limited to 20 people.
• Landscape for Life Series, Thursdays in June, 8 a.m. to noon, Millsap Bride’s Hall and garden grounds.
This course will be completed over the five consecutive Thursdays in June. Landscape for Life was developed to provide training to homeowners on sustainable gardening practices. It is based on the principles of the Sustainable Sites Initiative, SITES. SITES is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Botanic Garden, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and the American Society of Landscape Architects, according to http://www.landscapeforlife.org. • Janet Carson Workshop: Gardening for Pollinators, June 8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Magnolia Room.
Extension Horticulture Specialist Janet Carson presents the case for attracting pollinators to a home garden. Guest speakers John Zawislak and Pat Gipson will join Carson as the trio explores the world of bees, butterflies, and the myriad pollinators that support ecological communities. Checkin and refreshments, along with lunch orders, will be from 9-9:30 a.m. Lunch is included. Admission is $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers. Call or register online for reservations.
• “Some Like It Hot,” Small Standard Flower Show, June 13-14,
9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Magnolia Room. The Verna Garvan Design Study Group, consisting of Phyllis Byrum, Kathryn Hodge, Alessandra Hurst, Adrianne Kahn, Rose Knight, Jo Krallman, Joanne Pegler, Kathy Storey, and Terri Waterman, will present a flower show. Group members enjoy studying and practicing the art of floral design. The show is free and open to the public.
• Fly Fishing 101, June 17, Great Lawn and boat dock.
Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters will present an introductory fly-fishing class. Participants will learn the mechanics of casting a fly rod and practice casting in beautiful Lake Hamilton. Rods are provided, but guests may bring their own. Two classes will be offered, from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. Admission is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Reservations required; call or register online.
• Spice Things Up: How to Grow Your Own Culinary Garden, June 20, noon to 1 p.m., Magnolia Room.
Horticulturist and garden manager Minnie Shelor presents a practical guide to growing food at home. From the yard to the kitchen, Shelor shares pointers on how to grow edibles in any space, including using produce “trash” to grow an indoor culinary garden. The 101 Workshop is free to members or with paid admission to the garden. Reservations required; register online or call

• Design Camp in the Gardens, presented by University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, June 19-23, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Magnolia Room and garden.
Design Camp offers the chance to learn about the design professions through hands-on projects, tours, presentation and discussions led by architecture, landscape architecture and interior design faculty of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and collaborate with peers in a fun and creative studio environment while exploring the design process.

Health & Fitness
• Advanced Health Hikes, Mondays through June 19, 9-10 a.m., meet in the Welcome Center.
Fitness buff Sharon Turrentine will challenge guests on exhilarating 3-mile hikes along various garden landscapes with a different route each Monday. Comfortable clothes appropriate for weather and good walking shoes are recommended. Admission is free for members and $15 for nonmembers. Reservations are not required.
• Tai Chi Series: “Strength in Motion,” Thursdays through June
29, 1:30-2:30 p.m., Great Lawn. Join Oaklawn Center on Aging to learn this ancient, low-impact practice that increases flexibility, balance, and strength. Loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended. Admission is free for members or with paid admission or a special rate of $30 for any five sessions. Must preregister to utilize special rate.
