Gosnell’s McKinney takes decathlon title

CABOT — First-day leader Marquel McKinney, one of the late finishers, captured the Arkansas High School decathlon here Thursday.

The Gosnell senior totaled 6,140 points, 160 more than runner-up Zach McWhorter, a Springdale Har-Ber senior. Bentonvill­e’s Adrian Broadus followed with 5,885 points, Crossett’s Marcus Bornslater with 5,751 and Caddo Hills junior Christian Duggan with

5,708.

McKinney finished runner-up (44 feet, 11.75 inches) to Broadus’ winning

46-foot effort in the triple jump, earlier finishing 19th in the 110-meter hurdles.

Lake Hamilton sophomore Michael Harris placed 14th with 5,194 points and classmate Haze Farmer

16th with 5,141. Harris and Farmer tied for second in the pole vault with 15foot efforts Thursday, state champion McWhorter clearing 15 feet, 5.75 inches. McKinney, tying for 24th at 9-5.75, overcame a 494-point gap against McWhorter in the eighth event.

Jessievill­e junior Noah Eskew, clocked in 4:16.13, breezed to victory in the meet-ending 1,500 run. Green Forest’s Jose Lazano was second in

5:08.51 and Jessievill­e’s Jacob Bearden third in 5:22.43 with McKinney seventh in 4:48.74.

Duggan won the discus with 133 feet, 7 inches, Harris placing fourth at

108-9 and McKinney 18th at 91-9. McWhorter finished 10th and McKinney 12th in last year’s decathlon.

Tulsa scores in 7th, downs UA in softball

NORMAN, Okla. — After Arkansas tied the game with a home run in the top of the seventh inning, Tulsa responded with one of its own in the bottom half for a 5-4 victory Friday in the opening game of the NCAA Norman Regional softball tournament.

Haley Meinen’s walk-off blast came on Caroline Hedgcock’s first pitch in the eventh. Emily Watson (29-4) went the distance for Tulsa.

Sophomore Katie Warrick homered in the Arkansas ninth, senior Nicole Schroeder hitting her 17th of the season in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Schroeder holds the program’s single-season record for home runs, and her 118 RBI are the fourth most in program in program history.

Arkansas junior Autumn Russell recorded her team-leading 16th multi-hit performanc­e of the season.

In the double-eliminatio­n format, Arkansas returns to action at 4 p.m. today against the Oklahoma-North Dakota State loser.

HSU 6th, A-Tech 8th in national golf tourney

FINDLAY, Ohio — Henderson State placed sixth and Arkansas Tech eighth after Friday’s weather-plagued third round of the NCAA Division II women’s golf tournament here Friday.

Winds in access of 20 miles per hour, along with rain, lightening and 58-degree temperatur­es took its toll on the 72-player field. Henderson had a team score of 328_957 and Arkansas Tech a 321_962 with one round remaining.

Barry (921) leads by three strokes

over Dallas Baptist with Indianapol­is (927) third and West Texas A&M (934) fifth. St. Mary’s is 17 strokes farther back in fifth place.

Ann Parmerter of Dallas Baptist and Marie Coors of St. Leo share the individual lead at 8-over 224 by three strokes over Barry’s Charlotte Puts.

Henderson State’s Sarah Wright, a junior from Fayettevil­le, is tied for 15th with a 233, shooting a third-round 80. Sophomore teammate Luisa Gartmann is 28th at 77_238. Leading Arkansas Tech with 240s are Pia Nunbhakdi, despite an 84 Friday, and Caroline Fredensbor­g (79).
