BFL: Alexander, Benton anglers win on Ouachita

MOUNT IDA — Josh Ray, of Alexander, earned $4,079 as the champion boater in the Bass Fishing League Arkie Division tournament May

13 on Lake Ouachita.

Ray weighed in five bass totaling 15 pounds,

1 ounce, saying he used a three-eighths-ounce green-pumpkin custom swimjig with a Zoom Z-Craw trailer of the color. The winner said he also rotated in a Paycheck Baits Repo Man topwater throughout the day.

“I spent the tournament swimming a jig through the water-willow grass around Mountain Harbor,” Ray said. “I probably hit 10 areas that were each about 100 yards long. The lake was flooded, but they’ve been lowering the water which pulled the fish out of the bushes and into the grass.”

Jason Lieblong, of Conway, finished second at

13-4 ($2,040) and Hot Springs’ Chris Darby third at 12-10, each with five-bass limits. Darby ($1,808) had the heaviest catch in the boater division — 4 pounds, 7 ounces, worth $515.

Glenwood boater Jason Lenderman finished sixth with five bass weighing 11-7 for $711.

Benton’s Kendal Norman won the co-angler title with four bass weighing 9-9, earning $2,140. Little Rock’s Bruce Thompson finished second with a limit of 8-14 ($1,020) and Benton’s Steve Lee third with four bass of 8-11 for $646. Malvern’s Michael Gross finished sixth with two bass for 7-7 and $356. Jonesboro’s Colton Garrett finished seventh at 7-6, one of his three bass weighing 4-15 and worth $257 as the day’s best in the division.

A two-day Arkie Division tournament is scheduled Sept. 23 and 24 on Lake Hamilton out of Hulsey Hatchery Access.
