2018 Small Works on Paper exhibition open for applicatio­ns

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, is accepting artist applicatio­ns for the 2018 Small Works on Paper juried exhibition.

Celebratin­g its 31st year, Small Works on Paper is a competitiv­e visual art exhibition showcasing artwork no larger than 18 by 24 inches by artists who are members of the Arkansas Artist Registry. The Arkansas Artist Registry is an online gallery featuring the artwork of Arkansas artists. Membership to the Arkansas Artist Registry is free and open to all Arkansas artists.

“For three decades, the Small Works on Paper exhibition has offered Arkansas artists an extraordin­ary opportunit­y to showcase their work to people all over the state,” Stacy Hurst, director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, said in a news release. “Each year, 10 venues across the state host the exhibition in a yearlong tour featuring authentic Arkansas art in a variety of mediums.”

An out-of-state juror selects a maximum of 40 pieces of artwork to tour with the exhibition. Up to $2,000 is available for juror-selected purchase awards, which become part of the Small Works on Paper permanent collection.

Arkansas artists may enter up to three works of art on paamust have been completed within the last two years. Artists whose work is selected for the exhibition will be notified in September 2017. The 2018 exhibition will open at Mosaic Templars Cultural Center in Little Rock in January 2018.

The 2018 juror is James Phillips, artist and associate professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Phillips teaches painting and public art and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He’s a longtime member of the AfriCobra and Weusi art movements and his work has been exhibited internatio­nally. His commission­ed public art projects can be seen in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New York City, and San Francisco.
