A Hot Springs man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to a 2016 burglary in Garland County Circuit Court.

David Joe Turney, 36, pleaded guilty to residential burglary, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, with his sentence to run concurrently with a burglary conviction out of Hot Spring

County he was already serving. In addition to prison time, Turney was ordered to pay $3,455.68 in restitution to the victim’s insurance company and $170 in costs.

According to the affidavit, on

Nov. 28, 2016, a resident in the

2000 block of

Cedar Glades

Road reported that his home and workshop had been broken into and numerous household items taken with a total value of $2,692 and an estimated $1,020 in damages to the home and property.

On Nov. 30, the victim provided Garland County sheriff’s Investigator John Greathouse with video from his home security cameras that showed a white Lincoln Towncar pull into the driveway of the residence. One male exited the vehicle and knocked on the front door and then walked to the side entrance and began looking in the windows.

The man, later identified as Turney, walked out of view and then returned with a hammer and broke the glass of the door to gain entry. A short time later, he was seen coming out carrying items and then motioning to a second male who helped him carry the items. A few minutes later, the car was seen driving away.

Both suspects were later identified by Hot Springs police Detective Jarret Cantrell.

On Dec. 6, Greathouse and Investigator Kenny Ford questioned Turney, who had been arrested on unrelated charges, and he admitted to breaking into the residence and work shop on Cedar Glades.

• A habitual offender who fled from a routine traffic stop by police earlier this year was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday in circuit court.

Caleb Michael Brian, 33, who has remained in custody since his arrest Jan. 23 in lieu of $5,000 bond, pleaded guilty to a felony count of fleeing.

He is classified as a habitual offender, having been convicted

Jan. 15, 2010, in Greene County, Mo., of theft of property; and on May 6, 2015, in Jackson County, Okla., for falsely impersonating another to create liability. He was on parole at the time of his arrest from the 2015 conviction.

According to the affidavit, on Jan. 23, 2017, shortly after 10 a.m., police Officer 1st Class Randy Rodgers saw an unlicensed red Jeep Cherokee traveling west in the 300 block of Whittington Avenue and began to follow the vehicle, which appeared to be speeding up.

The officer initiated his lights and siren and the driver, later identified as Brian, stopped his vehicle at the corner of Whittington and Woodfin Street. As Rogers exited his unit to approach the vehicle, Brian sped off, driving west on Whittington.

Brian then drove south on Newton Street, turned around and drove through a yard, narrowly missing Rodgers’ unit. He then continued toward Whittington, “suddenly starting and stopping again.” Brian then pulled his vehicle into the apartment complex parking lot at 948 Whittington, almost hitting a sign next to the parking lot entrance.

In the parking lot, Brian continued to drive recklessly around the buildings before finally parking and fleeing on foot to a nearby apartment. He was located in the apartment and taken into custody without further incident.
