Lonsdale man allegedly flees; faces multiple charges

- GRACE BROWN

A Lonsdale man who led Arkansas State Police on a high-speed pursuit down Marion Anderson Road on a motorcycle Wednesday afternoon and then fled on foot was arrested on multiple felony charges after drugs were allegedly also found in his possession.

Deric Scott Seals, 49, who lists an L.D. Trail address, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with purpose to deliver, punishable by up to 30 years in prison; two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and unauthorized use of another person’s property to facilitate a crime, each punishable by up to 20 years; and felony fleeing and possession of drug paraphernalia, punishable by up to six years.

Seals was also charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, resisting arrest and first-degree criminal mischief, each punishable by up to one year in jail, and fleeing on foot. He remained in custody Thursday in lieu of bonds totaling $33,000 and is set to appear

July 10 in Garland County Circuit Court.

According to the affidavit, shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Arkansas State Police Trooper Michael Summit was on patrol near the intersection of Glade

Divide and Marion Anderson when he saw a black Honda motorcycle southbound on Glade which failed to stop at the intersection and headed west on Marion Anderson at a high rate of speed.

Summit activated his lights and siren and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver,

later identified as Seals, gained speed and continued westbound, fleeing from the trooper. Seals allegedly drove left of center, crossing into oncoming traffic, and passed another vehicle on double yellow lines at speeds up to 90 mph in a 45 mph zone.

As Seals approached the south end of Walkway Drive, he attempted to make a right turn onto Walkway and lost control of the motorcycle. He landed in the westbound lane of Marion Anderson, and then fled on foot into a wooded area.

Summit pursued him on foot, catching up with him about 50 yards south of Marion Anderson. While he was running, Seals allegedly kept reaching into the front waistband of his pants. When Summit got near Seals he deployed his Taser, striking Seals in the back. Seals fell forward, with his hands still under him.

Seals allegedly continued to refuse to cooperate with Summit as he attempted to detain him. He refused to show his hands and failed to comply with Summit’s verbal commands, the affidavit said. Even as he was being put into handcuffs, Seals continued to resist by pulling and pushing away from the trooper.

As Seals was being lifted to his feet, Summit reportedly noticed a black and red zippered pouch lying underneath him. Eight clear plastic baggies with around 39.4 grams of what tested positive for meth, a set of digital scales, a suspected meth pipe, numerous plastic baggies, an empty syringe and around 6 grams of suspected marijuana were allegedly found inside the zippered bag.

A computer check revealed the motorcycle belonged to a Pulaski County resident. The 18th Judicial District East Drug Task Force also seized $150 in cash from Seal.

Summit reportedly suffered injuries to his right wrist and middle finger during the struggle and Seals suffered injuries from the crash and was later treated at a local hospital.
