Justus Fine Art Gallery announces July exhibit
Justus Fine Art Gallery, 827-A Central Ave., will feature a series of group exhibitions over the summer months.
The July exhibit will include work by Taimur Cleary, Robert Fogel, Robyn Horn, and Rebecca Thompson. Summer Series II will open with a reception from 5-9 p.m. July 7 in conjunction with the monthly Gallery Walk downtown. The exhibit will be on display July 7-31.
Cleary’s paintings find interesting viewpoints and beauty within scenes of neglect and disrepair. The play of light across a half-burned home, deteriorating piers surrounded by bright blue water and old buildings with light piercing through the slats in the walls are examples of the artist finding elements of design in the commonplace. Cleary is currently an assistant professor of art and design for Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich.
As a biology professor for 25 years prior to pursuing a career in art, Fogel developed a deep appreciation for nature, especially land forms and rock formations that exhibit strong lines, textures and color. Many of his sculptures evoke the natural features that he observed during the summers he spent collecting fungi in the west. Fogel reduces his impressions from the natural world into minimalistic steel sculptures that echo those strong forms, a news release said.
Horn’s sculptures have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, along with being included in notable museum, public, and private collections throughout the country and abroad.
“I am drawn to abstract, geometric sculpture, the volume of it, the form, the textures, the negative spaces. I am obsessed with tension and movement, the gestural qualities of sculpture. I believe that the individual character of the material can be preserved by the inspiration of the artist, that they can both exist by the combining of the curving lines of nature, together with the angular lines of geometry, resulting in a gentle merging of the two entities, one working with the other in a union of souls,” Horn said in the release.
Horn’s multimedia paintings also reflect her interest in form, texture, and the creation of complimentary arrangements using organic and designed elements. In her painting, “Shades of Joan,” Horn combines acrylic, charcoal, and rust to create visual depth and texture.
Thompson’s paintings are inspired from her travels, from ordinary objects that catch her eye in a new way, and from people caught in a pivotal moment. Her bold use of color, expressive brushwork, and sense of place engage the viewer and invite lingering. Thompson’s work has been included in many corporate and private collections.
Justus Fine Art Gallery is owned by artist Dolores Justus and offers a wide range of original art including sculpture, paintings, ceramics, photography, and more by recognized artists. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, or by appointment.
