One last piece of advice

- Carl Ford Hot Springs Village

Dear editor:

I am writing in response to Loy Mauch’s last missive. As you will note in the body of my letter, this will be my last communication with Mr. Mauch. That is unless he speaks ill of someone in my family. He can call me anything he wants, but that’s where it should stop. Thank goodness for Laurie Rushing. Loy, thanks for responding to my last letter to the editor. Until a few days ago, I thought you were like me, just an old crank with too much time on your hands. Then an old friend from Hot Springs High asked if I knew that you once had been a member of the state Legislature. I almost dropped the telephone. Couldn’t be.

While I was off defending the Constitution for 35 years, you apparently were here spreading your distorted views to anyone who would listen. I was especially bothered by the thought of you being a role model for the children of our state. Now that is truly frightening. Having held an official position suggests you must know what you are talking about. I hate to be the bearer of bad news Loy, but you don’t. Not only are you ignorant of American history, you are hardheaded and unwilling to even look at the evidence dispassionately. In short, you are a lost cause and a waste of my time to even try.

In ending our conversation, however, I have one last piece of advice. Please stop embarrassing yourself. It may make no difference to you that you are thought of as a fool. That’s your business. But even the suggestion that your views are representative of the Republican Party and conservatives like myself is unacceptable. We do not share your hatred for the truth. We are not white supremacists or believe that God condones such bigotry. Jesus sees it for what it really is, a sin.

Fortunately, the people of District 26 saw you for what you really are after only one term: just a snake oil salesman; one who doesn’t even know that what he is selling is poison. Unfortunately, you were so bad at your job that you were replaced by a Democrat. Thankfully, Laurie Rushing came along to demonstrate that the damage you caused the party was not permanent.
