Mount Ida youths win national fishing title

FLORENCE, Ala. — Mount Ida’s team of Hunter Davis and Tyler Allenbrand split a $10,000 scholarshi­p as champions of The Bass Federation/FLW High School Fishing national championsh­ip here on Pickwick Lake.

Davis and Allenbrand brought a five-bass limit to the scale Friday weighing 23 pounds, 10 ounces, finishing with a three-day total of 53 pounds, 6 ounces. They prevailed by 1 pound, 14 ounces over the second-place team of Cal Culpepper and Mason Waddell from Georgia’s Harris County High School. North Mississipp­i Student Anglers placed third at

50-11, and Arkansas Student Angler Federation contestant­s Cade Gartman and Jay Morgan, both of Trumann, were 10th at 29-9.

Fountain Lake Bass Club members Hunter Bryant and Jordan Mungle led after the first round June 28 with five bass weighing 19-2 but dropped to

35th with no recorded catch in the second round. Davis and Allenbrand made the top 10 finalists in fourth place with 10 fish weighing 29 pounds, 12 ounces.

Two-person teams in grades

7-12 qualified through TBF high school state championsh­ips and Bass Pro Shops high school fishing open events.

Adam Brown Road races slated Aug. 26

In its 32nd year, the Adam Brown Road Mile is scheduled Aug. 26 at Lake Hamilton High School.

This is the eighth year at this location for the series of road races formerly held on Owens (now Aldridge) Road east of the school. It honors the memory of a Lake Hamilton High graduate killed in combat in Afghanista­n while serving as a U.S. Navy SEAL.

Race-day registrati­on begins at 7 a.m. at the east end of Adam Brown Road with the first race, for open males and females, starting at 8 a.m. Masters males and females follow at 8:20 a.m., senior-high boys (grades 10-12) at 8:40 a.m., senior-high girls at

9 a.m., junior-high boys (grades

7-9) at 9:20 a.m. and junior-high girls at 9:40 a.m. All races are one mile with the exception of a half-mile event for boys and girls

12 and under, starting at 10 a.m. The top five male and top female finishers in each division receive awards.
