Fun City Chorus preps for upcoming show
Fun City Chorus is preparing for its new annual show, “The Cigar Box Men,” a story of Prohibition, moonshining, and spiritual redemption in Hot Springs.
The show, based on a series of historical short stories by local author Jimmy Young, will be performed Aug. 26 at the Hot Springs Convention Center.
The chorus’ shows, which have evolved into stage-type shows featuring local artists under the direction of Steve Spakes, have been well received in recent years, including their production of “The Boys of Baseball” last year, a news release said.
“The Cigar Box Men,” set in the Prohibition era, will feature moonshining and church scenes. One segment of the show will include a raid by G-men; so there was an obvious need for guns during the era. Two FCC members, Chuck Fish and Bart Hampton, used their unique talents to produce nonworking replicas of a Tommy gun, a shotgun, and a blunderbuss with wonderful results.
Hampton is a third generation master electrician who specializes in the design and installation of control systems for industrial waste and sewer treatment facilities. He is an accomplished woodworker and a member of the Central Arkansas Woodturners.
Fish is a retired orthodontist, specializing in orthodontic/surgical correction of dentofacial deformities, and has co-authored two textbooks on the subject and traveled extensively lecturing on the subject. He is also an outstanding wood craftsman.
“The Cigar Box Men” will feature additional performers including Roxanna Collingwood, Clyde Adams and The Top of the Rock Ladies Chorus from Little Rock. Proceeds from the show help to fund the Fun City Chorus’ Young Musicians Scholarship Fund. To date, the Fun City Chorus has awarded over $13,000 in scholarships to Garland County high school students entering college to further their music career.
Tickets are $15 for general admission or
$25 for VIP seating and are available online at www.funcitychorus.org or from the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce or any Fun City Chorus member.
