Kansas trip set for Neighbors’ first UA team
FAYETTEVILLE — Mike Neighbors’ first season as Arkansas women’s basketball coach includes a visit to historic Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan., for a nonconference game against the Jayhawks.
Part of the SEC/Big East Challenge, the Arkansas-Kansas game is 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. Arkansas has wins over Oklahoma and Texas Tech and a close loss to Texas in the series. The Razorbacks are 4-3 against Kansas, which returns leading scorer Jessica Washington (17.1 points per game last year).
Arkansas goes on the road to begin a series with Nebraska Nov. 16 and has first-time meetings with Samford Nov. 12, Charlotte Dec. 7 and Abilene Christian Nov. 29 at Walton Arena in Fayetteville.
The season opener is Nov. 10 with Arkansas at home against Sam Houston State on Elementary Day at Walton Arena. Road games include Oral Roberts (Nov. 20) and host Texas-El Paso and New Mexico State (Nov. 24 and 25) in the UTEP Tournament, plus a Dec. 21 visit to Arizona State in the teams’ first meeting since 1989.
Arkansas’ other nonconference home games are Dec. 10 against Tulsa, Dec. 17 against Texas-Arlington and Dec. 28 against Grambling State. The Southeastern Conference schedule has not been finalized.
The SEC sent two teams to the WNIT and eight to the NCAA tournament last year. South Carolina defeated Mississippi State for the national championship.
Ex-major leaguers sign up for local clinic
Local youths will have an opportunity to play against former major-league baseball players Friday at the Boys & Girls Club of Hot Springs, 109 W. Belding St.
The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association’s Legends for Youth baseball clinic includes Dick Hughes of the 1967 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals
along with Russ Nagelson and Rich Thompson. They combine for 12 seasons and 212 games in Major League Baseball.
Following registration at 8 a.m., the clinic runs from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. According to a release, alumni players will teach pitching, catching baserunning and life skills. The morning ends with an autograph session and baseball giveaways.
