Problem not just Trump
Dear editor:
We live in a time when people in this country have accepted as their leader a person who is clearly mentally ill, a bully and in general, not a very nice person. The Germans during the early 1930s were not bad people. They were frustrated because events had created a world in which they felt they had no input. When Hitler came along and promised them that they would be great again, they adopted him as their savior.
Sadly, we are seeing that occur in this once great nation. Technology and automation have deprived many of their jobs. They have been bombarded by certain news outlets and unethical preachers that disregard facts and feed on their ignorance.
No amount of understanding is going to change these things or what they believe. No amount of niceties is going to get them to be introspective. No economic policy put forth by someone outside their tribe is going to be listened to, no matter how beneficial it would be for them.
I understand evangelical, white America. I was born into that society and have lived most of my life amongst it. I understand their fears are based on myths and lies. I understand they feel left behind by a world they don’t understand and don’t really care to. I understand they are willing to vote against their own interest if they can be convinced it will make sure minorities and immigrants are harmed more. I understand that they feel that they alone should decide who gets help and who is thrown by the wayside. I understand they have a problem with progress and will always have, because their belief systems are constructed against it.
The problem isn’t that educated persons with wisdom do not understand evangelical, white America. The problem is a lack of understanding why evangelical, white America believes, votes and behaves the ways it does by evangelical, white America.
The problem is not just Trump. The problem is that so many are willing to accept his lies and deceit. Trump has been quoted on the Constitution saying: “It’s a very rough system. It’s an archaic system,” “It’s really a bad thing for the country.”
There are so many of them that would replace the Constitution with the Bible. They just do not get it. We are headed down a path of destruction
and our once great nation is disintegrating. The damage done so far by Trump and the Republicans will be lasting and sad to say, permanent. Trump and the Republicans are doing all they can to destroy our institutions and eliminating as many protections for the citizens as they can.
I look for an attack on the Constitution in the near future. I, for one, support our Constitution and always will. Mike Nunn Hot Springs
