Electronic Waste Recycling Event slated for next weekend

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Schools, businesses, public facilities and residents in Garland County can make plans now to participate in a free regional Electronic Waste Recycling Event to be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Residents can drive in, drive through and drive out of the Church Street entrance at the rear of the Hot Springs Convention Center to drop off electronics for recycling, a news release said.

Items accepted include cellphones, televisions, large and small computer equipment, MP3 players, video game players, communication systems, copiers, printers and plotters, audiovisual equipment, fax machines, medical equipment, microfiche readers, mo-

dems, cameras, calculators, tape drives, and test equipment.

“This event is designed to handle large volumes of recyclable electronics that may currently be occupying valuable storage space waiting to be discarded,” said Randy Atkinson, Solid Waste Director and the event’s chair.

“Additionally, it prevents these items from going to the landfill,” he said.

Residents can also bring smaller quantities to the event, which is sponsored by the Southwest Central Regional Solid Waste Management District in cooperation with the Hot Springs Solid Waste Department.

The Great Arkansas Cleanup, the annual litter pickup and community cleanup event held by the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission each fall, is set to begin Sept. 9 with cleanups already scheduled around the state and will continue through October.

Communities and organizations in two-thirds of Arkansas’s counties hosted more than

140 local cleanup events last year. More than 7,000 volunteers picked up about 210,000 pounds of litter from roughly

1,735 miles of roadway and waterway and collected more than

900,000 pounds of bulky waste. “That level of dedication to removing other people’s litter is inspirational, and we hope that this year we see some sort of cleanup event being hosted in every county in Arkansas,” said Liz Philpott, KAB volunteer program manager.

“We know — and share — the pride Arkansans have in being an Arkansan and living in The Natural State. We know that all across this beautiful place, everyone wants Arkansas to be litter-free.”
