Carole C. Pope

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Carole Coffey Pope, artistic, kind and independent woman, died on Sunday, July 2, 2017, her birthday.

Carole was a lover of sailing, painting, artistic gardening, Japanese flower arranging, biking the Coronado bike paths and travel. She honored her family and her years in Hot Springs where she graduated Hot Springs High School in 1960. Her father and mother owned Coffey’s Camera and Art Supply on Central Avenue for many years. She and her friends had many photographs taken by the shop’s sidewalk cameraman.

Her father taught her the pride of horsemanship and caring for animals. She had four devoted canines, the last being a standard poodle, Toffee, who was her constant companion. Her mother taught her the value of kindness and compassion to others. Both her parents instilled the values of individualism, human rights and gender equality. Enjoying the beauty of the forests and lakes of Arkansas, her family camped and explored many of the natural wonders of their adopted state.

Carole was born in Glendale, Calif., and moved to Hot Springs in time to be in one of the first classes at Oaklawn Elementary School. She was always a gifted student from an early age. After high school graduation, she went to the University of Mississippi in Jackson where she completed her bachelor of science in three years. It was there she met her husband, Bill McClain, and after their marriage, they lived in Dallas and Albuquerque. Her second marriage was to W.R. Pope, a trainer for her father. Following her family’s involvement with Thoroughbred horses and racing, Carole enjoyed traveling the racetrack circuit going from Oaklawn to Saratoga to Omaha and other tracks. After their divorce, she moved to San Diego, Calif., and then Coronado, Calif.

She developed many close friendships over the years and maintained close contact with many of them. All who loved her will miss her sweet spirit. She was surrounded by love by her family at her time of passing. Services will be for family.
