Council, library mark Literacy Month with low-cost Spanish lessons
The Literacy Council of Garland County, a nonprofit organization founded to teach adults in Garland and surrounding counties to read, write and speak English free of charge, is partnering with the Garland County Library,
1427 Malvern Ave., to host $10 Spanish lessons for library patrons and area residents.
Under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by officials of the council and library, LCGC will provide instructors for the new Spanish lessons. Named simply Spanish 101, the program begins on Aug.
23 and continues for four consecutive Wednesdays to end during National Literacy Month.
In addition to hosting Spanish 101, the library will provide advertising for the program. Students will meet for classes at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 and 30 and Sept. 6 and 7.
LCGC began working with library officials several months ago to develop a Spanish 101 curriculum for residents of Hot Springs and neighboring communities interested in learning a foreign language.
Call Laura Lee Williard, executive director of Literacy Council of Garland County, at 624-7323 for more information on the organization.
The $10 fee for classes is due at time of registration at the Garland County Library. Visit the library online at http://www.gclibrary.com or call 623-4161 for more information about this program or other library services.
