Oaklawn Center on Aging (OCOA), offers free exercise classes; Tai Chi, Zumba Gold and Drums Alive to the Garland County community. Tai Chi is an evidenced based exercise based on nature. The gentle flowing movements strengthen the body and improve mental and physical balance and flexibility. Regular practice of tai chi improves chronic conditions, such as arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Tai chi also helps to make your immune system stronger, reduces stress, increases energy and enhances self-esteem. Dr. Paul Lam says, “those who practice tai chi become like a tree or river, calm on the outside, but full of internal strength, capable of withstanding whatever life may throw their way.” Zumba Gold is an exercise class dancing to Latin music. You will have fun working up a sweat while getting your cardiovascular workout! Drums Alive is an exercise program using drum sticks, a cushioned surface and fun music. The goal of drums alive is to improve the participants’ lives physically and psychologically through a unique sensorimotor drumming program involving drum sticks, an exercise ball and music. The primary goal of the Drums Alive program is creating a “whole mind, whole body” experience for all participating. Certified instructors lead these programs and all three of these exercise programs can be adjusted to meet the need of the individual participant.
