Top Arkansas anglers present seminar before prep tourney

Arkansas profession­al anglers will present a seminar for high school fishing enthusiast­s Oct. 28 at Hot Springs Convention Center.

Stephen Browning (Hot Springs), Mark Davis (Mount Ida) and Mark Rose (West Memphis) will offer tips and techniques before the inaugural Bassmaster Series tournament for Arkansas high school students, beginning Oct. 29 on Lake Hamilton. The seminar starts at 6 p.m., and the public is invited to the free event.

Davis will be giving away a half-day fishing trip, and the other pros will give away autographe­d prizes and tackle in a free drawing.

The two-hour seminar includes illustrati­ons, advice on mental preparatio­n, fishing one’s strengths, ledge fishing and approachin­g new water.

Visit Hot Springs is host for the seminar, with assistance from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

“It’s great to see these world-class pros give their time to help the next generation of anglers,” said Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs, in a release Wednesday. “All of them are donating their time and wisdom so we could make this a free event.”

Arrison added, “With the growth of high school fishing, this is the perfect event for these world-class pros to share the skills that it has taken them years to develop. This is a great opportunit­y for these young fishing enthusiast­s to learn the tricks of the trade and become more successful on the water.”

All three pros have earned more than $1 million fishing. Davis is a three-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year and the 1995 Bassmaster Classic champion. Rose is an 11-time Forrest Wood Cup contestant, finishing third in 2011 on Lake Ouachita.

Volleyball: LH girls win two at Malvern

MALVERN — Allison and Morgan Trantham helped Lake Hamilton’s varsity volleyball team defeat Malvern in three games here Tuesday.

Allison had five kills and

16 assists, also recording two solo blocks and an ace in the

29-27, 25-15, 25-17 match. Morgan Trantham had two kills, seven assists and 13 digs.

Jenny Peake added four kills, an ace and a solo block for the Lady Wolves while Mason Aitken posted 10 digs.

Lake Hamilton’s junior varsity opened the season with a 25-18, 25-18 triumph. Shahmarie Afkhami had three kills and seven digs, Meadow Orrell four kills and three digs and Hazley Irwin three kills for the Lady Wolves.

Lake Hamilton plays today at Camden Fairview and in the Mena Invitation­al on Saturday. Following a match Tuesday at Bryant, the Lady Wolves’ home opener is Aug.

31 against Texarkana.

Bryant at Lakeside

Visiting Bryant won two long volleyball matches against Lakeside on Tuesday.

Bryant’s varsity went five games for a 25-13, 25-21, 23-25,

19-25, 15-9 triumph. Gaylynn Green recorded her first double-double with 12 kills and

32 digs. Lyca Steelman had 13 kills, Olivia Lawrence eight, Abby Mahoney four and Molly Stineman three for the Lady Rams. Kailey Bausch totaled

20 digs, Hannah Whorton 27 assists, Lawrence 15 assists and Stineman six digs.

Lakeside’s junior varsity rallied for a third game before losing 25-22, 14-25 and

15-12. Cailin Ward recorded

10 assists and four kills and McKaila Davis nine digs for the Lady Rams. Claire Monte had seven kills, eight digs and two aces while MC Cowen recorded 20 digs.

Both Lakeside teams play El Dorado at home today, the JV match starting at 4:30 p.m.
