September events scheduled at Garvan Woodland Gardens
Garvan Woodland Gardens recently announced its activities for September. All events are at the botanical garden, 550 Arkridge Road, unless otherwise noted.

Art exhibit
Art exhibits in the Magnolia Room are free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
• Tim Gorman Photography Exhibit: “America’s Beauty,” Sept. 1-30. Arkansas native and resident of Saint Francis County, photographer Tim Gorman will present a collection of pristine photographic images displaying America’s beauty. The exhibit is a collection of images from the Olympic Peninsula to the East Coast, plus his favorite Arkansas images. The collection highlights national and state parks, including Glacier, Olympic, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend.
Gorman’s main interests are in making archival fine art landscape, wildlife, macro, floral, and nature images on canvas and metallic medium. He is continually upgrading his photographic nature stock of images across the America, some of which were taken in the Hot Springs area.

• Tai Chi Series: “Strength in Motion” — 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sept. 7 to Nov.

Join Oaklawn Center on Aging to learn this ancient, low-impact practice that increases flexibility, balance and strength. Loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended.

• Advanced Health Walks — 9-10 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 11 through Nov. 13.

Stimulate the heart and senses with health walks at Garvan Woodland Gardens. Fitness buff Sharon Turrentine will challenge participants on exhilarating 3-mile hikes along various garden landscapes, with a different route each Monday. Comfortable clothes appropriate for weather and good walking shoes are recommended.
Members free or with regular admission. No reservations required.
• Casual Health Walks — 9-10 a.m. Thursdays, Sept. 7 through Nov. 16. Meet in the Welcome Center.
Join local hiking enthusiast Dee Garret on 1-2 mile hikes through the garden at a comfortable, conversational pace. Comfortable clothes appropriate for weather and good walking shoes are recommended. Members free or with regular admission. No reservations required.
• Group Trail Run — Tuesdays, Sept. 5 through Oct. 31.
Meet in the parking lot at 5:45 p.m.
Runners of all paces are invited to join a Garvan group run this fall. Woodland trails provide routes of 3-5 miles, with mild to moderate elevation change. This run is open to the community.

Workshops
• Plant Diseases, prevention and remedies — 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sept. 7, Magnolia Room.
Plant pathologist Sherrie Smith presents a survey of plant diseases, their causes and control methods. This class contains four sections: ornamental trees, roses, day lilies, and tomatoes. Each section will include biotic and abiotic causes of disease along with plant varieties that are resistant and susceptible.

• To Be or Knot to Be-Having Fun with Knots — 10 a.m. to noon Sept.
16, Magnolia Room.
Outdoor enthusiast Colleen Iund presents a knot-tying workshop geared toward children, but open to individuals of all ages. Participants will learn to tie knots useful for camping and will use their new knot knowledge to make a paracord survival bracelet. All materials are provided.

• Hang Them Out To Dry: Xeriscaping Basics, noon to 1 p.m., Sept.
19, Magnolia Room.
Garvan Horticulturist Minnie Shelor discusses xeriscaping techniques and how to implement them in the central Arkansas climate. Typically found in arid regions, xeriscape refers to a style of landscaping that requires little or no irrigation.

• Watercolors in the Garden — 1-4 p.m., Sept. 28, Magnolia Room. Back by popular demand, watercolorist Cynthia Schanink will teach a floral paint-along class, with peonies as the subject. The instructor will provide a drawing for participants to trace onto watercolor paper. No experience is required for this workshop, which is geared toward beginner artists. She will demonstrate each step to a finished painting for participants to take home in less than three hours. All materials are provided.
