Time to move on

-

Dear editor:

Our history, for all Americans — white, African-American, American Indian, Asian and any other ethnicities that I do not intentionally mean to omit — has had its good as well bad times over the centuries. But it is what it is, it’s all of our histories and what’s done is done. It’s in the past. We cannot change it, but hopefully we can learn from it and not make some of the same mistakes that were made then, now.

But it seems, unfortunately, we cannot seem to do that and move on and live our lives to the fullest. The statues, monuments, history markers and flags that make up our histories, they do not kill people, people kill people. What’s next, folks? The veterans wall? Will it need to be taken down, removed, destroyed, or any other icon of history? That wall, just like the statues, monuments and flags, is a reminder of why we, as human beings, are able to voice our beliefs and opinions. That wall has the names of people of every color, race and ethnicity, the same people that are being killed today and some of those on that wall were my family, and some were your family. Was it necessary for them to die? I wish that they did not, but they did and because of that, is why we all have the right to let our voices be heard.

But do more people of any race, color or culture have to die for what our/ their ancestors did in the past? Do more people have to die or be killed now, just because their skin is a different color, or because they don’t like a flag or statue or someone looked at them cross-eyed or for any other inane reason that people find fault in other people or for what they believe in? They don’t have to; no one does. These inanimate objects that are part of history don’t have to “die,” either. If you don’t like them, then don’t look at them.

It’s time humans that we All. Grow. Up! Move on and live.

While I’m at it, seriously, city of Hot Springs, a red light at St. Louis and Airport Road? Goody, goody gum drops, now we can enjoy bottleneck traffic on this side of town just like it is on Central Avenue! Anyone that lives here, even people that visit here, knows, or at least you would think they would know, that you do not attempt to turn left onto Airport Road from St. Louis Street, especially if it is rush hour! There are other streets and alternative routes to take. I still cannot believe to this day how many people attempt to turn there. Let’s just put a red light at every intersection and at every corner. They will make the banks that are on every corner look that much better! Donna Robertson Hot Springs
