Mahlon E. Midkiff

On Friday morning, Sept. 1, 2017, Mahlon Eugene Midkiff went home to be with his Lord and Savior. He was 82 years old. Mahlon was born Jan. 2, 1935, in Hot Springs, Ark., as the eldest son of Arville Walter Midkiff and Lealure Gladys Cooper.

After serving briefly in the Army as an engineer in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., he left the military to answer the call to serve the Lord as a preacher. He went to seminary school in Los Angeles, Calif., and soon began what would ultimately be a lifelong legacy of humble service and deep devotion to Jesus Christ. Many may know that Mahlon never drove, but that never stopped him from going to all the places God would send him. He walked, hitchhiked or took buses to Mexico and all throughout Central America to preach the word of God. It was there in church, at 27 years old, he would meet a beautiful black haired Costa Rican girl of only 18 years, and ask her to be his wife. Neither spoke the others’ language, but after only a few dates, they were married.

Mahlon was married 53 wonderful years to the love of his life, Flor Maria Mora, of San Jose, Costa Rica. Today we find comfort and joy in knowing they are now reunited forever in the presence of the Lord. He was also preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Judy Kathleen Coger and Ruby Jester.

Mahlon was a loving father to seven children, Ana Terry (John), Wayne Midkiff (Janie), Alice Franke (Kevin), Richard Midkiff (Kathy), Anissa Odom (Vince), Zandra Westenkirchner (Gregory) and Audra Bauer (Raymond). He was the proud grandfather to 23 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mahlon is also survived by his brother, Elwin “Buddy” Midkiff, and his beloved dog, Lovey.

With his passing, our community suffers the loss of a great man. Mahlon was well known in Hot Springs for his beautiful paintings and murals, most if which can be found in local Mexican restaurants. He was gifted in art and in music, able to play the piano, guitar, pipe organ and accordion. And his hands were the instrument God would use to build churches and homes for others.

One didn’t need to know Mahlon for very long before they could see he was a kind, generous, God-fearing servant of the Lord. Always the tallest man in the room, his presence was unmistakable. He loved telling jokes and making others laugh. And he was a consistent example of humility and what it means to be Christ-like.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

A celebration of Mahlon’s life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with Wayne Midkiff and Billy Kitchens officiating.

Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery in Jessieville.

Pallbearers will be the Garland County Sheriff ’s Department.

Honorary pallbearers are the employees at Michael’s.
